Contraband found upon admission detox/ recovery

Where do you dispose of drugs/ contraband brought in upon admission during a search at a detox center ?

It depends on the substance. Alcohol is poured down the drain. MJ which is legal in my state has to be returned to the patient. Illeagal drugs are bagged and turned over to the local law enforcement,

Just a curiosity question...what should be done with illegal drugs/contraband found during the admission process in an ICU or med-surg setting?

Before throwing out their illegal property, ask "we found what we suspect to be illegal substances. Would you prefer we turn it over to security/police, or can we just dispose of it?"
