Continuing Education

Published

I work in a high acuity CCU at a trauma center and we get a lot of critical care/medical ICU overflow to our unit. Ive been a nurse a year and a half, and off orientation for almost a year. I want content I can study on my own related to my specialty because I feel like I've forgotten a lot from nursing school and want to refresh myself on pathophysiology and pharmacology. Anybody have suggestions for casual studying and continuing education?

Have you considered joining a professional association relevant to your area of experience or pursuing certification?

I have found professional associations to offer so many learning opportunities and I learned so much as I was studying for certification in my specialty area.

Get all your AHA certs, maybe work on the ENA certs if interested. Get your CCRN and your CCRN-CMC, (also your CSC if pertinent to your unit). Join your local AACN chapter, get on your unit council or find a committee to work on in the hospital.

If you really want to refresh patho and pharm you could also take a graduate level class in person or online. There are lots of patho, pharm, NP specialty classes out there that you can take as a nurse (pre-graduate) if you are interested. I would definitely recommend these and would say that a lot of it comes back as you are studying it on a deeper level. Just like riding a bike.
