Contacting Nurse Managers

Published

Just out of curiosity has anyone ever tracked down a nurse manager's email and gotten their job from sending emails or contacting them in any way?

On several occasions, when I really wanted a position, I have camped out on a potential employers doorstep until they hired me.

I went only as far as calling, but never approaching in person. but one of my classmates did and landed a job.

I got my start before email. I used to track down the name and snailmail business address of managers of departments where I was interested in working. I don't know if it helped or not, but I put in three applications and had five offers when I graduated in 1977. Now, HR seems to handle most of the screening of resumes, etc. My manager isn't thrilled about getting direct emails from applicants who bypass HR unless it's someone she knows: the mother of one of our physicians who just graduated from nursing school, the daughter of the nurse manager of the MICU, the nurse who works in CCU now but wants to work overtime in our unit to see if he likes it.

Specializes in Vascular Access.

It's been a couple of years but back when I was a manager I would occasionally receive phone calls from potential candidates. I appreciated the effort and I mostly enjoyed talking to people. There were a couple of crazies in there.

I think there is much to be said and learned from a telephone conversation that can't necessarily be conveyed through an email.

Having said that, I recognize and would caution you that not every hiring manager is open to communication outside of the established channels such as HR.
