Consulting Positions-Hourly Rate? Salary?

Recently I was contacted by a IT recruiter for a contracted position [long distance assignment] as a clinical analyst. He asked what my hourly rate was, omitting travel expenses [covered separately]. I am not new to consulting, per se, but am new to IT consulting. I have not a clue as to the "average" hourly rate for contracted services. Also, are there any variables I should be aware of, such as the location of the position, length of contract, amount of travel required, when figuring out a rate?

I appreciate any suggestions and/or feedback.

Thanks.

Good question. I would think if you are making $40 an hour now, and not travelling that you would want to add about $10,000 a year to that ($5.00 an hour). I would also think depending on the benefits of the consulting position you would want to add something to the hourly wage as well.

I am weighing in my mind the same thing. For me an extra $10,000 a year to travel just doesn't cut it, especially when the benefits are not as good.
