My past experience was 18 years in CVICU/CCU/Burn ICU. I took 8 years out of nursing for a break and just returned myself but in outpt Dialysis. I'm still in orientation with a great preceptor and have been at it for a month now. I found it thus far to be not to difficult learning the procedures and/or the machines/equipment. I'm not sure about other units but where I am the staff and the pt's seem to have a good attitude with considerable laughter on a daily basis. I love the hours (3days a week and 4 off) and the PCT's have been very patient and extremely helpful in my learning. At this point I havent found the transition to be difficult at all. It is busy but doesnt seem to have the problems with pts or management that I seen in the hospital settings. Your day is pretty predictable with an occasional crisis unlike the usual daily crisis you see in critical care. It's different not having a Lifepak every hallway! If you like the same work enviroment with not as much second guessing then you'll like Dialysis. I know I do as it is much less stressful then the 18 years I worked in units. And much easier on the body with exception of walking.

i have been doing this over 18 years. like any other job, some days you love it, some days you hate it. but i feel this is my calling. you get really close to the patients. you want to see them do well. sometimes there is what i call excessive paperwork for head nurses. but overall, i can't imagine doing anything else.
