Considering Leaving M/S for OB

Hey Everyone :)

I am new to allnurses, but have found a lot of good advice here. I have interviewed and shadowed for a very nice OB unit in my area and I really loved the unit and the nurses that were working there. I am hoping that they actually offer me the job! I have over 3 years experience and would be leaving a very busy and chaotic M/S unit for a busy postpartum unit. Has anyone out there gone from Med/Surg to OB and was it a good career choice for you? Can anyone tell me any pros or cons it has had? I am certain that I do not want to do M/S anymore, I want a total change and I found OB to be very interesting in school. Thanks! :redbeathe

I'm only a nursing student, but I say GO FOR IT!!!! I want to be a OB nurse too so I guess I might be a tad bit biased lol. Good luck with your decision. :D

A co-worker of mine just left our busy med-surg floor for L&D and has told me that she loves it and wishes she would have done it sooner. She is very happy even though it meant going back to nights for her. She did say that even after orientation the fetal monitors are a challenge so I would recommend getting some resource books to help you with that. The nurses on the L&D forum could probably give you the names of some good books. I will cross my fingers you get the job!

I know so many people who yearn for OB positions!! I think you should definitely do it if you get the job offer. In my opinion there is no downside to leaving a chaotic medsurg unit!

Good luck! Sounds like a great opportunity! I am a little jealous. I would love to work post partum, but no one here will hire into that area unless you already have experience in the specialty. Hope it works out well for you! Keep us posted.

I would say go for it if you are interested in it. The two on my floor that came from M/S love it. A good resource book for you would be the AWHONN Fetal Monitoring, but your facility will probably provide you with it.

Thanks everyone for your input! I have worked day shift for a couple of years and will be going back to nights with this position, but I am fine with that. I tend to be a night owl anyways The OB manager just emailed me this morning thanking me for shadowing and she said she is talking with HR and will get back to me. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed! I'll keep y'all posted!

Bama RN,

Thanks for the tip on the book! If I get the position I will ask if they provide it and if not i'll make a trip to the bookstore

You're welcome! It's a great book, and provides the patho behind what you're seeing on the monitor! If you need anything else, just let me know! Keeping my fingers crossed for ya! :)

You know in your heart what you want, I really hope it works out. I'm willing to bet the M/S unit would take you back if the switch isn't a good fit for you.
