Confused about nursing

Published

hello, I am completely new to the field of nursing, but I am really interested in it. I recently (meaning two weeks ago) finished my master's degree in teaching. While I like teaching, I just do not feel the passion I expected to feel towards this career. Teaching is stressful and you take so much work home :(; therefore, if i do not have the passion, there is nothing to keep me going and make the work worth it. Anyway, I have seriously been considering going back (again!) to get a degree in nursing, but i just cannot decide. I have always been interested in the medical field ( I was a pre-med major, but changed to English Ed b/c of a teachers recommendation). I love any t.v. show that has to do with medicine/health and like reading about it also. I just have so many questions such as:

1.) In Delaware, do the hospitals tend to hire more people with their associates degree or their bachelor's in nursing?

2.) how competitive is nursing in DE (Will I be able to find a job right out of school)

3.) What is the pay like for a new grad? (Can't be worse than teaching!)

4.) What are the differences between what you can accomplish with an ADN and a BSN (I would love to do something like neo-natal, emergency room, or even just working in a hospital)--- What degree would i have to get to do these things?

I know that i asked a lot of questions, but i am just soooooooo curious and i want to do something that i feel passionate about.

Thanks!

You don't need a BSN to work in NICU or ER. I have been told, if you are working in the hospital as a staff nurse, ADN or MSN, the pay is the same. BSN's are required for community health nursing (not the same as home health nursing) and teaching etc.

There is long waiting lists in nursing schools in DE.

I believe the pay is about $22-27.00 per hour for new RN's (In a hospital). It really depends on what part of DE your in.

I don't know how easy it is to get a job as a new RN. I think it goes in spurts. I am still job searching, but my situation is a little different than other new grads because I have very specific hours that I can and can't work. I think if you can start off on nights and or weekends it would probably be easier to get in the door.

I hope this helps, good luck..
