Confused about which nursing path to take!?

Published

Hey guys,

I am an undergrad in college, and was originally an Education major, but recently I have changed my mind to nursing. The college that I attend now does not offer a nursing program, but they just signed an agreement with a nursing school that if a student from my college maintains a 3.4 GPA in ANY major, and get a C or better in the nursing pre-reqs, they will automatically get into the accelerated nursing program at SUNY Downstate, and we will get our BSN is 15 months, (after we graduate in four years undergrad.) My question is, should I transfer out of my college and go to a nursing school, such as LICH and BIMC, where I will get my associates in nursing after in two years, so I can work and go to school at the same time for my bachelors in nursing, or should I stick with my college I am enrolled in currently, and attend the accelerated nursing program in SUNY Downstate after I graduate? ANY comments or suggestions help. Thank you! :D

I'm not sure if money plays a role in your decision, but once you receive your bachelor's degree, you don't qualify for most grants and scholarships. I'm not familiar with the schools you listed. I don't really see why you would need to complete your education degree. Is there a school in your area where you can transfer to get a BSN?

Well, I was thinking that since I already wasted two years, I might as well complete my education degree because its just two more years, and than I can transfer over to a BSN program. All the BSN programs by me (and I think just in general,) are four years long, so the accelerated program seemed good to me because it is for fifteen months. I noticed your username is switched out of teaching. Why did you decide to do that?

The BSN is a four year degree, but the first 2 years are pre-reqs. In most BSN programs, you don't enter the nursing courses until Junior year. So, if you've completed the pre-reqs, you may be able to complete the nursing coursework for the BSN in 2 years. You can definately complete an ASN in 2 years if you have the pre-reqs done.

In most states you can teach with any bachelor's degree. You may have to take a few competency assessments or a few classes to get your permanent certificate. I've decided to leave education and enter the field of nursing because of the versitility available in nursing.

Please don't consider your 2 years in education as a waste. I'm sure you learned something that can be useful in nursing or life in general.

Okay, I understand what you mean about the pre-reqs. Yeah, I learned A LOT these two years, so you're right. Thank you so much and I wish you all the luck and success in your nursing career! :yeah:

Hi October,

Look into other schools in your area as well. If the path you are considering is available, then the odds are good that other facilities/institutions offer something similar.

Do an online search for sites that are invaluable when it comes to assessing schools, student feedback, and when it comes to getting more insight from people who have been in your shoes.

Good luck!

I am currently in an accelerated RN program, and to be honest, sometimes I wish I went for the LPN option, and get some more experience... sometimes everything is just so foreign... anyways... good luck
