Well let me start by giving some background on my nursing life I received my RN in May 2012 got my first job at a nursing home. I was a stay at home mom 2 years before getting a job so I took a prn since its still hard on me leaving. My dream job is OB lol go figure my own labor experience actually made me want to do OB. :) I'm persistent, exactly a year later I was finally offered one I kept in touch with the hiring manager built rapport with her absolutely love her and would love to work with her.. at this hospital I was first offered E.R. then a week later offered OB so I accepted OB.. 5 days before orientation i was called from HR, the CNO role took back my offer due to low census and all they would offer me to do is med surg..then transfer when Ob opened up. I am not to fond of medsurg..so now back to square one applying for jobs. I applied for E.R. offered a position took it. been on orientation for 2 weeks now. I like it its pretty cool. I love the company too. and this company has a hospital in my town so I could possibly transfer. (but who knows how long that will be) so the other day the OB manager from a different company called me and told me there are two full time positions if I want one its a for sure deal this time she said please hop on my train let me make it up to you for the crap that happened last time. lol so im really confused. I want to do ob so bad dream job. but I honestly feel like a douche im still in orientation at er. but I hate to pass up my dream job opportunity who knows how long it would take to transfer to ob or have another opportunity.. story of my life right now. complicated. this is killing me. any advice or opinions would be so appreciated. thank you!

Thats a tough one! Weighing one real job versus one offered......
I love the ER and think its a great place to start, equipping you with a wide array of skills and patients, and stressful situations.
My advice would be, start with what you got, stay a year, and then switch. Tell the OB people that you have a responsibility to fulfill at your current job and ask for them to keep you in mind.
Thats just me though!
Best of luck

If your heart really isn't in it, then stop applying for jobs you don't want. That'd be a good place to start.
As for your predicament, couldn't you ask to drop to PT in the ED and take the FT in OB?
I know you don't want to miss your kid while she's at home, but you are doing this for her while also trying to find a niche in your career that brings you joy. But don't leave ED and then not have an actual job lined up. Otherwise you will be in a worse position.
Also, don't bail on the ED. Not only would you burn bridges for yourself, but also for every dedicated new grad out there who is looking for a job on that unit. A NM gets burned enough they start saying "no more new grads" or "new grads are unreliable and don't fulfill commitments" etc. Besides, who knows, maybe one day she switches specialties and ends up your boss somewhere else. She will remember.
I think your best option is to wait for an official written offer from OB job and then offer to go PT with ED. Just tell them it's the commute or something and that you do not want to over extend yourself. Then you can work 2-3 days with OB, and 1-2 days with ED. Lots of skills to be learned!

When you accepted the ED job offer, you made a commitment. My advice is to honor your commitment and stay for at least one year.

That is a tough choice. Nice that you have those choices, though. If you are in the ER, and let's face it, ER staff are pretty tough on who gets in, so good for you for being there. Do you love it? Do you see yourself there for the long haul?
If you don't love it and get offered a full-time OB job, in writing, then why not take it?
Only you can decide what is right for you. If you think you'll eventually want to leave the ER, then it might be good to go early on. If you think the ER is better than you expected, you might want to wait it out and hope you can go OB later down the road. You will gain invaluable experience in the ER that can translate to OB.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
