Most of the conferences I go to academic (social sciences, ethics etc) but the rules seem to be much the same - I see a range of outfits from suits with ties to jeans and thongs (which are footwear in Australia, before you freak!). Go with something you feel comfortable in, by which I mean not too tight,a neckline you worry about, shoes that pinch etc.

I actually have just been thinking of this topic as I leave for Phoenix on Saturday. I absolutely hate, hate, hate to dress up at all.
However, for conference days, I wear khaki's and sweaters. Always bring a sweater because at least for me, I'm always cold!
