Boss came to me with a HIPA violation that I committed accidentally. I sent some patients results to the wrong doctor. He said that I will not be written up for it but that I needed to sign some documents to be filed since it was a HiPA violation. I am very surprised. This would seem like a major goof up, though it was accidental. I feel so bad that I made this stupid mistake. I'm extremely grateful that I wasn't written up. You would think someone would for something this bad.

Even the noodnicks who wrote the HIPAA law have to realize that inadvertent mistakes occasionally happen with no malicious intent.
You did not willfully or maliciously disclose information. You made an honet mistake, and fortunately the recipient of the information was another professional who handled the situation discreetly.
Big difference from someone who noses into her ex-best friend's record and posts it on her Facebook page.

Gotta love HIPPA....NOT Really, I don't think it was a career ending move....a mistake that was made unintentionally and the recipient was another health care professional, so I don't see that it is a big deal. Try following HIPPA in a small town where everyone is related to everyone else....fun times.
