competition

I want to work in L&D. Its all Ive ever wanted to do. I think my personal history will help me be a better nurse in that department, and I also think my desire is great. However, Im scared that the competition for a job in that department will keep me from doing it. Anyone have any imput on this?

You can't control the competition. All you can do is make sure that your application is in, your resume is nice, that your interview goes well, and you leave them with a good impression.

I think as far as competition, it depends on the hospital. When I did my L&D rotation last year, the hospital I was at had lots of openings. The nurses there told us that no one wanted L&D, so they had plenty of OT if they wanted it.

OMG, I am the same way "rebemomma". I actually decided to finally pursue my dream of being a nurse because of the great experience I had with my 3rd (and last child) 4 years ago. I did the best that quarter of OB, didn't even have to study. I have 3 kids, I have been through it all during all 3 births. I have so much life experience in that area. I love babies (kids of all ages too) and really had my heart set on it. Well, I interviewed for a postpartum position and was in the running for one of the 2 jobs opened, along with one girl who already worked there in another department, and one who is very young, doesn't work in a hospital and has no kids. Well, guess who got the jobs??? yep you guessed it, the one with no hospital experience or life experience. I heard she knew someone that works there already. So yes there is competition out there, unfortunately. I still want OB, but apparently not there. Good luck, and DON'T give up your dream, I am not!!! LOL

I have two kids and have had 13 miscarriages, but even before my kids thats where I wanted to work. AND, I really only want to work at one hospital, but I will keep my options opened. I still have a long way to go in school.

when i went through lpn school 1/2 the class wanted to work at riley...and were told that : a) LPNs don't get hired there and b) all nurses want peds/ob so chances of getting a job there are slim, especially with it being "the" children's hospital. i know 2 lpns who promptly got hired there. so if l&d is your thing, go for it!

It is! I think i will increase my chances a bit too because I want to work in High Risk.
