comparison of working in UK/USA and in HK

Published

hi everyone,

i am a new nurse in HK. i am considering should i work outside to explore more or lot after having fews yrs experience, but i dont know what factors i needed to think about, the following are just some of my questions, besides them, i would like to ask your other opnions, thankyou for all your help^^..

1. i would like to ask hw much time do u all (from UK/USA) need to work per week, 48hrs per week or?

2. the salary system in UK and US: how much is the starting salary? will it be increased every year? if yes, how much @yr?

3.can i ask more that, what is the minium salary needed to pay taxes for all pl living in UK/US? and what is the % of the salary needed to pay taxes?

thx much

Hours in the UK generally 37.5 hours full time and most Trusts not willing to pay overtime. Also a lot of financial difficulties at the moment and very hard to get work. Plus if from outside the EU very hard at the moment to get a work permit. Before that you have to go through the NMC requirements which may take several months. In the US the hours full time generally are 36 or 40 hours depending on whether you are doing 12 hours shifts or 8 hour shifts.

Pay in the UK should start at band 5 on this scale, depending on experience depends on where abouts on the scale you start and there are small increments on a yearly base depending on the scale. You also get a small payrise with the government but is nothing to write home about. Unable to comment about US pay

If working in the UK you pay tax (depends on your tax code), national insurance and anything else that the goevernment feels free to through at us and is also monthly payment. Your take home pay is what is yours at the end of the month, very rarely do you end up paying more and sometimes you even manage to get a rebate. But with the tax man that doesn't happen often. They are very quick to take and very slow to return. Pay in the US tends to be every 2 weeks and state tax varies depending on state you are working in. Everyone pays national tax, plus any other benefits like health cover.

This is just my interpretation on how it is worked, have included a couple of links for the UK

sorry, i would like to ask one more question

i a a fresh grad nurse this yr, but i will go to a special unit- paediatric cardiac

my questions are:

1. should i choose a field as my future development as early as possible? cox there a lot to learn within any one of nursing fields, or should i explore more first ? but , will it be late to hv a specialty?

2. should i request to go back some general wards to get some more experience first, b4 choosing any specialty for further development?..cox i am so scare that.i will only remember the knowlegde in this special field, some basic thing will be forgotten..

3. what is the best learning step/ developing step for a fresh grad, like me?

o..i am so confusing :p:uhoh3:

What are your plans for the future? Are you looking at immigration?

It all depends on what you want to do. Sometimes it is benificial to gain experience in a general setting before specialising but a lot depends on youe experiences as a student. If you are looking at gaining experience before moving abroad I would suggest gaining general experience for a while and then look at specialising.

This is just my opinion

hi,tina

im also a rn from hk and working in hk too. but im not fresh grad. i grad for 6 yrs and working in or now in a ha hospital. i also plan to move to usa(new york) or other states , still thinking which state i can go. i just apply for the cgfns exam and plan to take it in nov,14this year.

have u search for any information and make ur plan to move there? bcoz it spends u lots of time since we dont have any agency in hk. i do everything by myself....:o

i hope we can keep contact if u want for any informations to go to usa in the future......

i also left some messages here b4 about my experiences. i also worked in specialty (icu and or) , but some ppl said there's not related bcoz we all have to start from the beginning once we work there.

hope i can solve what u are confusing.......

I wouldn't worry too much about the CGFNS exam. It is a requirement by only approx 5 states in the US for foreign nurses. If the state people want to work in does not require it then you do not take it.It is not a requirement for the UK

hi ms samira,

thx for ur information..reli..^^

do u get my private msg b4..cox i cant see ur reply..i am afraid its lost or not..:p
