Community Placement

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice. I am a 3rd year nursing student. I was given a community placement starting in Sept. at a shelter for abused women and children. I am not woking under an RN and am wondering how to approach this placement. I have to do health promotion in terms of giving two hour long presentations and speak with each client individually. I am to take their health histories and can do assessments. Any tips of making this placement all it can be would be great. Thanks!

Work with them where they are at. If you start trying to teach about something they're not ready for, it's not going to go far. A lot of things need to be individualized in a situation like that. They all have different stories, different backgrounds, and different problems.

Good luck! I'm a relatively new PHN, but I hope it helps!
