communication assignment

Hi there everyone

I have to write a 2000 word essay on how i would communicate effectively with a 5 yr old patient in a hospital.

How do i set this out and in which way would i write.

I would first introduce myself in a warm manner so as to make the child feel safe and comfortable. I would use pictures etc etc. I will make the child feel as comfortable as possible and i will do my personal best to ensure he best possible relationship between us, so he or she will trust me.

This is just a rushed example but am i going the write way?

Any ideas on what i can write, and in which way?

You have to consider the child's developmental age. Did they give you nothing else with the scenario? About explaining meds...anything?

Read up on Ericksons and Piagets theories for that age and I bet you can find tons of examples. They are probably wanting this. Specifics for this age group, things unique to them.

Stick to the normal writing patterns, you introduction, what is entailed in that age, examples of what you would do and why, and a closing.

I would guess (just from how it was in our Peds class we just go done with) they are wanting an encompass of how you would approach your assessment and meds or procedures you would be doing.

You don't need anything more specific IMO. All you need to know is it's a 5 year old and in the hospital since this is all about communication, you will have assessments to do, procedures most likely and medications to administer.

They want to know that you understand this age group and how you talk to this age group, what their thinking may be and so on. If you research the different theorist for the developmental ages you will have your paper and can create examples.

I may not be the best for med/surge advice or A&P but I am good at talking to children and how to approach what with the various age groups. You have all the information you need for a great paper. :)

I agree...look back at the theorists who deal with developmental levels, especially Erickson and Piaget. And make sure you get down on their level when you're talking to a 5-year old...and don't use big words :)
