Common sense

Nurses COVID

Published

Seriously would you play in traffic blindfolded because someone told you to do so? I'm having the hardest time believing that no one, not one "healthcare worker" refused to care for that patient without the proper equipment. All I have been seeing on tv and such, are hazmat suits being used when in contact with pt's that have ebola. BUT your supervisor, nurse manager, hospital administration...said to use standard ppe's when dealing with this pt. And to use tape to cover your neck??? What happened to common sense, nursing judgment, critical thinking? I guess I would have been a fired nurse on that day. And I heard that they also had other pt's to care for besides Mr. Duncan....Rediculous! Presby won't have eye water to cry with, when it's all said and done.

People were using judgement. All over this board ppl have been shouting down conspiracy theorists in favor of "the facts" and research? Now, the nurses whove done so were wrong for having done so?

Why are you blaming the nurses/docs/aides when its the CDC thats withholding info...and the hospitals... ?

These sickly pts dont need to be brought anywhere near the hospital. What with the lack of PPE and the nurse/pt ratios? This crap will spread like wildfire.

I wldnt have refused a week ago. Id likely refuse to provide care now, though. These folks coming down with Ebola - cant all be chalked up to breaches in PPE.

I'm not blaming the nurses/docs/aides....I'm simply saying after watching CNN or other news stations, the care givers in Africa are not only wearing hazmat suits but also get the suits sprayed with a bleach solution before taking them off. And even when there is a " suspected" ebola case, the EMT/PARAMEDICS show up in hazmat suits...

Sigh, reposting my response from other threads on this topic:

I said this on the other thread about Ebola, so here it goes:

If anything, something had to happen to reveal how poorly hospitals are managed and how they treat nurses; in the midst of all things, how nursing can band together and reveal to the public how corporized (my word) hospitals have been and how they care about the bottom line will be their downfall.

I knew it was going to happen, but I surely didn't suspect that it would come from an infectious disease.

The CDC is not like the Feds or National Guard; they cannot come and commandeer a private company, so no, I don't blame them entirely; however, the hospital said they had it under control, when obviously they didn't, and when corporate is refusing to approve proper PPE or even allow the CDC in, then the ire should be on how MANY hospitals are run.

This is a HUGE opportunity for nurses to step up and speak out in how facilities are run and allow the public to scrutinize how hospitals are run roughshod over how the front lines-especially NURSES are treated and ignored, and not supported...it has been prepared to happen, unfortunately it had to happen this way.

It's so easy to judge, but think about all the patients that come in every day with vomiting and diarrhea. Are we as a nation going to put a hazmat suit on with each of those patients? or what if they present with just a fever? It was his travel history that should have caused high alert from the beginning.

No common sense here. I think they were all in denial and shock… and waited for someone else to take control instead of instantly quarantining him. Not to mention that they were probably over worked and under staffed. This could have happened in any hospital at any time. This will be an example of what not to do for decades to come.

I bet the hospital goes under. Who would go there for treatment for anything now? I know I wouldn't. I would avoid that place like the plague.. (haha)
