Combat Nursing responsibilities and risks

I am strongly considering joining the Navy to become a combat nurse. I want to help and assist our troops over seas. How do I go about becoming one? and what are some of your stories of being a Military/Combat Nurse?

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.
If you are specialized you can work in a forward surgical team (10 people in a austere location, but have to be OR, ER, or ICU nurses)

Just a small correction, LT - that is a split FST. A full FST can have 20 people, give or a take a few (we had an extra CRNA and surgeon due to a unique mission).

While Deployments are rapidly dwindling, there are plenty of Mobilization missions...some stateside, some overseas, and some in really remote locations. Those humanitarian missions are not without risk or excitement, but if you want to serve, and recognize the value of what we do, you will find satisfaction in your mission, even if it isn't as "cool" as being in a "combat zone". Being deployed/mobilized is still safer than driving on the freeway during a holiday weekend.

Awesome, thank you. I really would no matter what im doing its just the feeling of helping people that brings the satisfation to me.

What are some of those humanitarian trips the Navy has been on ?

Zii2013 I feel like we have a lot in common in regards to future plans. I am also wanting to join the military at some point. I just graduated with a BSN and I start working in the ICU next month (nurse internship program). My plan is get a couple years of ICU experience and then look into joining some military branch. I don't know what kind of military experience you are looking for but I think it would be awesome to deploy with a special ops team

If the link doesn't work, google search "Air Force SOCCET"

I would like to go "downrange" or "outside the wire" when I join, but with all the military cuts and reading other posts, that doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon. I'm sure it will be a long journey to get where I want to be. I need to start talking to recruiters soon.

Just thought I share some of my future goals!
