Columbus State Jan 06, 2010 applicants

Anyone know how long it is supposed to take to get our acceptance letters?

When you guys took the A2 - what scores did CSCC count towards the 75% of being admitted? I wouldn't imagine they would count the anatomy and physiology sections as those aren't required as prerequisites and most students don't have that knowledge? They say on their website they just look at the sections that predict success. I wouldn't imagine that learning two very difficult sections on your own when they are integrated as part of the curriculum predicts success as a nursing student!

Also - do you need a 75% cumulative or a 75% minimum in each section?

I am still waiting to hear if I got into the online program so it could be awhile for the traditional program. I run out to the mailbox everyday anxiously awaiting a letter which will hopefully be in a large envelope.

Those of us who applied in Jan of 2010 didn't take the A2. The NET was the entrance test that we took. It was discontinued at the end of 2009 and replaced with the A2. My very limited understanding is that the the chem, A&P and biology sections will all count along with English and math. But, I'm not certain how it's scored - whether there is a composite score of some type or whether you have to make a certain score in each section. Here's some info from CSCC's site. http://www.cscc.edu/Nursing/PDF/Admission%20Assessment%20Info.pdf

msteelart - how's anatomy going? -- lol at the large envelopes. I don't know if CSCC does send a whole packet with their acceptances. But, I still remember back in the dark ages when I received my letter from my #1 college and it was a small envelope. I was SO upset until I opened it to find that it was an acceptance and that they sent all that new student stuff under separate cover. I didn't apply for the online. My kids'll be in school during the day and I prefer to learn in person. I have had to take a bunch of my co-reqs online and hybrid and my GPA hasn't suffered But, I know that I learn better in person - that active lecture/q&a type situation as opposed to working all on my own.

Shortnorthstudent, I applied to both. I would rather do online because my 5 year old starts kindergarten this year. I don't know how to do the latchkey daycare thing if I have clinical at 7am. Do you live in the short north? I would love to live down there so I could walk to the gallery hop and comfest. I live in the suburbs and really don't like it at all.

Anatomy is going good except I am worried about my 2nd practical score. He hasn't posted it yet and I am worried about the cadaver part. The cadavers were not in very good shape and you really don't get enough time to think about it. I find the written exams to be pretty easy so I do well on them.

I'm sorry your cadavers are not in great shape. We had a couple that were not particularly fresh last quarter. It does get better though with cadaver lab. I know that the first experiences with that part of lab went so fast because we were all trying to just get used to the cadavers. By the lab final, you'll be used to them and the time limit won't be quite as difficult. I'm glad you're finding the lecture exams not too difficult. I took it hybrid and it was one of those classes where the lecture instructor gave little to no help. I did it, but I definitely studied my tail off for my grade.

I definitely understand how the online program can be perfect for lots of people. I thought I was going to love online classes for their convenience. I still take them - in fact next quarter, I'm taking 2 classes online because they fit my schedule better. But, for me, I learn much better audibly and prefer the give and take. I've had to work a lot harder to maintain my GPA on those science classes I've taken online than those that were in class. And, I don't feel like I learn quite as much on the online courses. My other problem is that some professors think that online means that you are supposed to completely teach the class to yourself and don't provide much in the way of lecture notes or other meaningful assistance. I would expect the nursing classes to be different than that, but that does still concern me.

I used to live in the Short North. It was awesome, but we're out a little ways now that we've got kids.

I don't think CSCC sends out large envelopes for acceptance, you'll get the other stuff later. I'm in the online program and I graduate in June. There is a lot of interaction with instructors, maybe not face to face with your theory instructor but you will have labs to start and clinical instructors every quarter. I really only struggled with one course pharmacology, I got a B in both but the were my first Bs so there you go. And there will always be weekday clinicals at 7 am. There is always a Saturday clinical as well, but they try to reserve those for people who work M-F 9-5. It takes some adjustment, I have kids too, and for one of them school doesn't start until 9. My husband goes into work later on my clinical days which is awesome.

I think you'll do fine with the online program. They're big on saying, it's online not self taught.

Good luck

I don't know how people work 9 to 5 and do the nursing program. I heard it was difficult and time consuming even if you don't have a job. Achiever, you must be an awesome student to get only 2 B's and you have kids too.

shortnorthstudent, I see to be the opposite of you. I learn much more when I am taking online classes. When I did my undergraduate degree it was all in class and I don't feel I learned as much and I had awful study habits. I guess the online classes have forced me to develop better study habits and more motivation because it is all dependent on me. If I have a teacher in front of me I tend to expect the teacher to give me everything I need to know. It made me lazy but that may have been because I was in my early 20's and I was more interested in hanging out with my friends than studying. Now that I am a stay at home mother I enjoy learning because I am excited to get a job as a nurse and have a life outside of this house. I am not really the stay at home mother type.

I just got my acceptance letter. I got accepted to the online program. I am so happy. :)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

So - small envelope or thick envelope? :)

Is there a deadline for you to accept their offer? I'm wondering if they have to wait for responses from anyone who applied to both tracts before sending our traditional tract acceptances/rejections.

Thank you. It is a small envelope with a yellow paper you have to mail back for your acceptance. It says I need to have it returned by February 24th to accept. I heard a rumor that once you accept one offer then your other application is dismissed. The online program acceptance letter says my start date is autumn 2010. I heard a rumor about the traditional that so many apply that sometimes there is a wait till the spring quarter, I wonder if that is true. It would be nice if CSCC would release the numbers. I would love to know how many apply and get accepted. I would also like to know how many actually graduate. This girl in my anatomy class just went to the orientation and she says that only 75 students graduated last quarter. So if there are 40 in the online and about 140 in the traditional, that means about half will quit. She says they really scare you in the orientation. Did you apply to both?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You can't get rejected to the traditional track assuming you meet the minimum requirements (which you do if you were able to apply). Everyone gets accepted and they simply place you in the next available class (hence the wait list). The online program is the only one that is competitive admissions and thus, no wait list.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like maybe they'll send out traditional letters in early March if they wait to hear back from the online folks.

I considered applying to the online, but I don't think my family would survive the extra time it would take me to study that way. Plus, I'd still have labs and clinicals during the day, so the extra couple of hours a week in class isn't that big of a deal. So, I'm only waiting on traditional. I have to finish up patho and micro this spring/summer and then I won't have anything else to take other than the NURS classes.

I had my traditional application in by 9:02, so I should be in good shape - I hope anyway.

Columbus State does not maintain a waiting list for the traditional program. My understanding is that they received over 200 applications in the first 2 hours of the 2 week application period. While I do believe that they will offer some people the option to enroll in the spring 2011, they do not fill up their classes for the next several starts (if they did, then the applications from Jan 2010 wouldn't have been for a fall 2010 start).
