Looking at a position in Columbus area. Been assured salary is negotiable. I have multiple years of experience as a psych professional (therapeutic side), and will graduate nursing school in May. The position is psychiatric-care based with some case management and crisis intervention (both of which I have done before). I'm already trained on their charting system.

Got an offer for 24.18/hr, full benefits, steady schedule, 2 weeks vacation, 11 paid holidays. loan forgiveness if I stay through my DNP and work for a couple of years after, school help during grad school - it seems pretty good. I immediately countered the salary and they said they are happy to negotiate.

What is a price I should be looking at settling at? The state I'm in currently starts new grads around 30/hr, and we're actually a very low income area. I was thinking if I can get it to 25.50 or 26/hr that would be the best scenario. For people in Columbus, what is a livable salary? I have a toddler who will need daycare. I am a single mother, with no help from his father, so I need a salary that is livable completely on my own. I can walk into a job locally at 30/hr so if I can't get a livable salary it's not much skin off of my nose, but I really want to relocate and love the job description and the person who would be my manager seems like a great person to work under. I'd be happy to start at a lower wage if it was livable and meant relocating to an area with more opportunities and versatility.

IMO 24 or 26 is definitely a livable salary in columbus, even with daycare costs; of course, some of it depends on your standard of living. you may not (probably) wont be able to buy a house in Upper Arlington or another expensive suburb right away but there are lots of great neighborhoods here with affordable houses, nearby parks and libraries, easy access to highways, etc. I think Columbus is a great city so maybe I am biased :p

Could you give me some ideas on neighborhoods to look at? :) I accepted the offer and am looking for the cheapest rent in the safest neighborhood possible......looking online doesn't give me much direction and is proving time consuming! If you'd be willing to message me I'd love to chat with you!

Without knowing what part of the area you will be working in, I would recommend looking at the Gahanna area on the east side, and the Hilliard area on the west side. Grove City on the south side is a good area too. Most of the areas to the north are either too pricey, or not good areas.

Thanks. Offer ended up being 26.44/hr (so 55,000/yr) to start, which looks to be pretty good compared to the average new grad salary. Now it's just moving cross - country! Tips to decrease any costs?
