  1. Thanks. Offer ended up being 26.44/hr (so 55,000/yr) to start, which looks to be pretty good compared to the average new grad salary. Now it's just moving cross - country! Tips to decrease any costs?
  2. I too have poor vision. I'm going into mental health nursing and couldn't be more excited. I hope everyone on this thread is having some great experiences! :)
  3. Being aware of yourself is probably the biggest thing that could get in the way of your nursing license. If you have a mental illness and you don't know how to acknowledge it or control it, you may struggle to be a safe nurse sometimes. If you can keep on top of things though, and really work to develop a slew of tools to work through things, you'll be fine. Definitely try to stay away from states that are super specific and demeaning, they're not worth it if you have a MI IMO.
  4. I feel like I'm completely flunking all of them. Kind of freaking myself out - for those of you guys who have used this, what type of scores were you getting? I've also been using ATI and score well on there - I don't know if it's because I only get to the khan academy questions at the end of the day when I"m tired, but I feel like I'm just missing them left and right!
  5. Could you give me some ideas on neighborhoods to look at? :) I accepted the offer and am looking for the cheapest rent in the safest neighborhood possible......looking online doesn't give me much direction and is proving time consuming! If you'd be willing to message me I'd love to chat with you!
  6. Looking at a position in Columbus area. Been assured salary is negotiable. I have multiple years of experience as a psych professional (therapeutic side), and will graduate nursing school in May. The position is psychiatric-care based with some case management and crisis intervention (both of which I have done before). I'm already trained on their charting system. Got an offer for 24.18/hr, full benefits, steady schedule, 2 weeks vacation, 11 paid holidays. loan forgiveness if I stay through my DNP and work for a couple of years after, school help during grad school - it seems pretty good. I immediately countered the salary and they said they are happy to negotiate. What is a price I should be looking at settling at? The state I'm in currently starts new grads around 30/hr, and we're actually a very low income area. I was thinking if I can get it to 25.50 or 26/hr that would be the best scenario. For people in Columbus, what is a livable salary? I have a toddler who will need daycare. I am a single mother, with no help from his father, so I need a salary that is livable completely on my own. I can walk into a job locally at 30/hr so if I can't get a livable salary it's not much skin off of my nose, but I really want to relocate and love the job description and the person who would be my manager seems like a great person to work under. I'd be happy to start at a lower wage if it was livable and meant relocating to an area with more opportunities and versatility.
  7. Hey all! I'm just wondering if there is anyone else on here applying for OSU's BSN - DNP program? Wondering how everyone's interviews went and thought it would be nice to talk to others as we go through the process - hating the wait! Would love to hear more about everybody. I graduate with my BSN in Nursing May 2017, I have a previous Bachelor's in Psychology. I've never worked as a nurse buy have almost 8 years of experience working in mental health (just on the therapeutic side instead of the medical side!). I'm applying for the online PMHNP tract Hope to hear from a few of y'all, would love to hear from previous applicants too about how things are going!
  8. Kind of following this - applying to the BSN-DNP program. Like you all though, I have a Bachelor's in another field first. I'm doing the accelerated BSN currently throughout University of Wisconsin so that I can work at a higher level of pay while I go through school. So In some aspects my application is a little similar to yours in the idea that my personal statements, etc, have to be a bit tailored to my previous experience in mental health vs. experience as a nurse (I did rehabilitation and counseling based work, going for a PMHNP!). Just kind of following along to get a feel for the general population of nursing students. When do you guys hear back?
  9. I know someone who just got a participant email - how's it going for everyone else?
  10. Hey guys! I'm in the May 2016 cohort right now (start clinical a in less than 2 weeks, YEAH!) It's definitely busy. Some days I study for 4 hours, some days I study for 12. I take every weekend off to be with my son, though I do work during nap times and usually for a couple of hours after he goes to bed. Some classes are pretty easy to grasp - like anything to do with Mental health and neuro is my jam (BS in psych with experience in neuro/mental health), but we just finished a cardiac unit in patho physiology.......lets just say I'm studying my butt off to get straight A's in the rest of the exams to counter that grade. You will definitely find strengths and weakness, some days you get material immediately, some days you don't catch on until 2 days after the exam. I don't have any official say in anything to do with my clinical, though they did make a specific request (or were supposed to anyway) to remove me from any night shifts and be reassigned to days - this is due to a seizure disorder though, and required disability paperwork to be filled out. I'm a single mom of a toddler - it's a difficult program, but even with kiddo it is doable.
  11. Tell me, if you hated the program so much, why did you pick it back up? Your postings clearly indicated that you started in 2015 (I'm guessing October cohort), but next month is when clinical for May 2016 would be staring. Clearly there's a gap in there. So I'm curious why you would return to the program if you found it so distasteful? To applicants: I know a few who have gone through this program, and once they hit clinical, their preceptors consistently remarked on how much more prepared they were than other students from the local programs. They definitely get stressed out, but if you work as a team you can truly learn a lot of information, and learn to apply it. The ability to become a good nurse is dependent on you, just like in any program. Everyone I've talked to recommends this program - and I am out of state by hundreds of miles, so it is by no means local. And yet, we have multiple students who are attending/have attended with great success! 😊
  12. I am in an accelerated 12 month BSN, just started. I also found out 2 days ago that I am pregnant. I have a 15 month old and will be a single parent to 2 children come Nov/Dec (bad timing all around with daddy deciding to leave). What's done is done, now it's time to be the best student and mother I possibly can be. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations that might help me stay more organized/get through the last 5/6 months of this program? I cannot afford to take school off at this point if I want to provide for my child(ren) in a timely manner. There is nothing in my school's code that says we cannot do clinicals while pregnant and I will be at the end of my OB clinicals at my due date - the best damn place if I ever go into labor during clinicals. My clinical site also does not have anything barring us from clinicals if pregnant, and we can return as soon as we feel able to. I know I can push through, but the more ideas and advice I have, the better! Thanks everybody. This is going to be hell, but I am going to show my children you can go after your dream no matter what the obstacles, and I am going to be able to provide for them ASAP darnit. So any advice you'd have school wise or baby wise to help us get through this would be very appreciated!
