Columbia University SRNA's question about admission

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Applying for the 2012 class at Columbia. My application was solid until I took my gre today. I did horrible. 390 q and 440 v. I called the college of nursing and they said since the gre is changing I can't take the new one because they won't receive it In time. My question is to anyone who is currently in the program...is there still hope for me?

My stats: 3.8 gpa summa cum laude, 10 years nursing, 4 years CTICU, Bls, acls and pals, CCRN. I'm really bummed. Just looking for some advice. Thanks.

Hi- I'm currently a student in columbia's crna program, and I think you still have a great shot at getting in. I didn't do great on my gre, either. The most important thing that you MUST worry about is your personal statement. By far, it is one of the most important things you're sending in your application. It essentially takes the place of an interview. I don't know what you've written, or if you've written anything at all yet, but make sure you spend some quality time writing it. Don't fret too much about the gre score- there's not much you can do about it now, and it's not really a great representation of how you will do in a nursing graduate program. Apply- don't let this bum you out too much. Good luck!

Thank you very much for the info. I've written my personal statement but have yet to submit my application. I will take another look at it to see where I can make improvements. Thanks again.

I am in the same boat. Retaking next month

To be completely honest, Columbia is rather numbers-centric, but there's nothing that you can do about your GRE score now. Of course that shouldn't stop you from applying. As the other poster said, just work on making the rest of your application as strong as possible. Good luck!

thanks are you a srna

I am also in the CRNA program at Columbia and I disagree with my colleague. Columbia is highly numbers driven ESPECIALLY the GRE. Getting an 830...well..that's just a really bad score...incredibly sub standard for most schools...especially Columbia. I'm not trying to be mean but I want to be frank with you. You are competing with people that have achieved over 1400 on their GRE's. An 830 is an incredibly low score. A 390 quant score is just unthinkable. Math is the one section you can actually work on and well a 390 shows the adcom that you haven't. I absolutely wish you the best but the purpose of the GRE, or at least one of them, is specifically to try to compare you against the applicant pool. An 830 will more than likely put you in the very bottom 2-5% of most every applicant pool at every school out there.

I would think the bare minimum would be 1000, and I sincerely believe even that is too low for Columbia. I would absolutely take a GRE course and retake the exam.

Good luck!

im just wondering when did columbia give out acceptance letters?

I called them and they said they give out the acceptance letters in January. That is a long time to wait. Praying for the best.
