Columbia ETP 2010

Published

Hey Y'all!

I'm getting ready to apply to the Columbia's ETP for 2010. I was just wondering who else was applying and what you were doing to make your application stronger! Also where else are you applying and what do your stats look like (GPA, GRE, experience, etc) ? I'm getting nervous as I start the whole application process and just thought I'd turn to the forums for some support and guidance!

I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with y'all! Hope to hear from you soon! :)

I feel your anxiety! Last year when they sent out acceptance letters, they accidentally sent some people blank attachments so people were freaking out. I'm in the current ETP class and we are working hard to smooth out the kinks and improve the program for future ETPers. Good Luck to all of you:)

Hi:

I feel that it was strange that the email we were sent today did not have a signature.

It was sent by Jose but Jose did not sign it and neither did anyone from the admissions office sign it. I guess no one wants to take the responsibility for the delay in the acceptance and rejection notices.

WOW, I just got home and read the e-mail from Jose. At first I didn't see the Feb 11th, I just read Thursday and I'm thinking oh maybe it's there now. As I was about to check, I was like wait a min! Feb 11th???!!!!! An entire week! What changed from the 'Monday at the latest' answer I got this morning.

Yes, patience is truly a virtue that I don't seem to have lately. But what can you do. I just wished they had sent an e-mail like this earlier in the week!

I am taking a Sociology and a Chemistry class right now. If Columbia takes me, I can drop the chemistry and if they don't I can drop the sociology. So basically I'm doing all this work for a class that I won't be needing, that's why I have been so on edge with this.

I wonder what has delayed them like this.

Thanks Caffreak!

Wondering what you guys are working on improving in the program? Would love to hear your perspective on your ETP experience thus far!

I almost fell out of my seat when I saw Jose's email last night. The subject line was a bit deceptive, since I thought it was my decision. At least my anxiety has subsided and I actually slept well last night. I hate to wait another week, but we have no choice.

Hang in there, everyone!

ditto, lets hear some more from you caffreak! how is your first year going???

Hi caffreak et al,

I know this info is available elsewhere but can't seem to find it. Can anyone provide the general outline of the year? I know the summer session is M-F pretty much in class all day long. Then there is the 5 x5 in the fall. Is this generally M-F? Then what is a typical winter and spring schedule?

Sigrid

Hello again,

its pretty clear that the courses are from about 7:00 ti 4:00 daily and to expect to have to stay some evenings until 8 p.m.

it is a full time program and there is no time to work . i think anyone that thinks they have to work and they can work during the etp program is fooling themself. you cannot work during this program unless you want to flunk out.

it is impossible taking 19 credits i the summer, 33 in the winter and 8 in te spring.

i believe this was all discussed during their open house. in additon some rotation will be on weekends depending upon where we are placed. they mentioned that you shuld not plan and weddings or deaths while attending this program

dingras

Thanks Dingras. I'll try not to plan any deaths next year.

I have more issues with that than most about death if I get into the program. My dad is going to be 90 He has lots of energy, is very healthy and takes no medication. My mom is 82 and takes lots of meds but very vivacious. She just painted a hallway at her home. It just scared me when I heard this said at an open house. I heard a student in ETP was dismissed because a member of his immediate family died and he left town and went to the wake for a few days. They did not take him back to the program so they say. I heard he brought legal proceedings against the University. Not sure what happened. This was just a story I heard.

I too will not plan on anyone's death.

Dingras

The school is actually great with working with people who have specific needs or issues. I know some people who had to deal with deaths and such and they were able to take tests late. I wouldn't worry about stuff like that. They did ask us all for a list of days that we knew we would be missing in advance.

The summer was extremely busy. three days of classes, one day of lab and one day of clinical.

Fall and Spring are the 5x5. you have three before winter break and two after.you also take pathophysiology and assessing clinical evidence in the Fall. We are divided into classes and each class has a different 5x5 schedule. During that time you're in class 3 days and clinicals 2 days. In the Spring, after the last 2 5x5's we start integration. This is the only time where your may have clinicals over the weekend. It totally depends where and who your placement is with.
