Why doesn't Children's(and other hospitals) higher DSN grads?

I have noticed that Children's doesn't hire DSN grads and I have heard a few other hospitals don't either and I was just curious why:confused:

Yeah, that was a disappointing thing to learn about who will hire from where. I would call the HR departments of each hospital and ask. I did that and Children's told me they used to hire people from DSN but they don't anymore. I think it had to do with accredidation. They did tell me that once DSN was accredited either with CCNE or NLNAC that they would re-evaluate this decision. I did call some other HR departments and some got back to me and some didn't.

I did tour DSN and was really impressed with the school. I hope they do get their NLNAC accreditation someday. I know it takes time.

There was another thread about this (about DSN) recently that mentioned this and, yes, it's because the program is not accredited by one the standard nursing accreditation agencies. They have other accreditations, but not either of the ones that count in nursing. The school is approved by the state BON, which is why graduates can get licensed, but individual employers/hospitals can decide what their requirements are, and many require that, in addition to simply being licensed, you graduated from an accredited program.

For that matter, hospitals can simply decide that they don't want to hire new graduates from a particular school because they don't believe (whether based on actual experience or not) that a particular school turns out well-prepared graduates. That's entirely the choice of the employer.

I currently work at both hospitals (University and Childrens) and here's what I have been told.

Since I am currently employed with Childrens they will honor my BSN from DSON regardless of NLN accreditation. University will honor my BSN if my school achieves NLN accreditation within 6 months of my graduation. As of right now DSON is in "candidacy" with hopes to have full accreditation by Oct 2010. Once we are fully accredited both University and Childrens will hire DSON BSN graduates. Hope this helps!
