Collin College Spring 2013 applicants

Published

I recently applied to the nursing program for Spring 2013 but have not been a student at Collin College. I have heard numerous things about how you get accepted, the importance of the PSB score, whether or not you have a degree, etc. Anybody out there in the same boat as me? Wondering what's true and what isn't? I was also told we should get letters in the mail some time around September 11 either being accepted or rejected. True?

Any knowledge on this would be great!

Congratulations! The orientation went over what to expect, how to get your scrubs for clinical, which books to get, the forms for the physical and dental exams, and a few other things. Those were the big items, many of them due by January 4, so try to get that packet from the department if you can, as soon as possible.

Thank you! I did get the packet and she went over several things with me. Do we have to order or buy our scrubs and shoes from somewhere special? Or just as long as they are that type? Do you know where I can find shoes that are 98% white? I am nervous but so excited!!! Thanks for all of your help.

We have to buy the white scrubs through the website they specified. As for shoes, most nursing stores have proper one. They are hard to come by for men, but tons of them for women. Also, you can get yourself whatever scrubs you want to wear in the lab. I went to Planet Scrubs - good selections, and they have lots of shoes, including Kloggs and Dansko. You may have to order the white ones, since its not a "normal" color except for students like us. Remember they have to be closed heel, so that eliminates most clogs - but the Danskos are clogs with a closed heel, so that's what Im thinking about even though they are expensive ($125!). If you get over to Frisco, and the Stonebriar Mall, there is a store called The Walking Store on the second level that stocks Dansko and can special order the white ones for you. Some may buy them online, but I'd rather do it local to be sure they fit right.

As for the books, I have them saved in this wishlist on Amazon.

Also, although this is a bit unusual (from a married guy to a woman he doesnt know), you may need to do some underwear shopping. Read upthread - you may need to get some "granny" (for us guys its grandpa) underpants because the white scrubs can be a bit transparent.

Thanks so much!! I did find some crocs that has a closed heel and only $44. Crocsâ„¢ Neria Work | Comfortable Women's Work Shoes | Crocs Official Site Would the little logo on the side be ok? I haven't tried them on yet or anything... just trying to search for prices before I head to stores.

So are you getting all of those books for semester 1? I thought we only need 3. I saw the NCLEX one, that's a good idea, I might do that as well.

I am married as well with two small kids. Thanks for letting me know!

Yes the list of books is all of them on the handout. Including the Henke book which we should be able to borrow at the library. So, yeah, we only need the Taylor books and the Med/Surgery book to start., which is what they told us in Nov 30 orientation.

I think they mentioned we cannot wear traditional strap-back crocs with holes in the toes, or any thing that doesn't have a closed toe and closed heel. The one you linked looks like it should work. As for logos I took a picture of shoes i had questions about (on my phone) to the office and asked if they were acceptable, so I'd recommend you check with them.

I'm excited about the start of all this too! I'm also nervous as can be about just how much we have to learn and how quickly we will be learning it.

Anybody out there get registered? I got my permit codes in the mail today.. I was really hoping for Wednesday clinical, but got Thursday. I wonder if we are allowed to switch?

If I get Wednesday I'd swap with you - did not get my codes yet. We can probably ask Charlene.

Each time I try to register for my classes its says "Field of Study Restriction." Anybody else have this same problem?

Thanks! I'm sure the holidays have slowed down the mail.. Fingers crossed you get them tomorrow.

Did you try registering with your permit codes?

My wife set the mail in a different place so I did not find it until this evening. I will register in the morning. It looks like I have Thursday clinicals.

I do not see any permit codes! There is a letter saying "Attached you will find a copy of your permit codes to use for registration as well as your spring syllabi and calendars". Problem is there is only a small slip of paper stapled to the letter, with just my name, a list of CRNs, and the course names and times. No syllabi, no calendars (although I did get an email with those) no codes. There is also a page with the SurScan information (for the drug screen). But that's it. No "codes" that I can see other than the CRNs - and I get the error Field of Study Restriction and cannot register. So something is wrong.
