College grad/ military medic/corpsman going into nursing

Hey everyone! I have a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, have 6 years of clinical health care experience, 3 years of healthcare management experience and 3 years of general management experience. My undergraduate GPA is 3.0 and my upper level GPA is 3.2. I am taking a bulk of my science requirements and it seems that I might end up with a 3.8 GPA in my science component. I plan on taking both the TEAS V and the PAX RN and applying to SUNY Downstate and SUNY Stony Brook (New York) for their accelerated BSNs and Montgomery in Maryland & Miami-Dade College in Florida for their specialized medic/corpsman to RN programs.

Any advice from anyone that has attended these programs?

Accelerated BSN or corpsman to RN?

Any advice to increase my chances?

Any other school or program options available that are reasonably priced?

Thanks everyone!

I was looking at a few schools in Cali, but the out of state tuition is pretty steep. There are a few programs that I have looked at that offer vets in-state tuition but no guaranteed admission options as of yet. And the search is on! I will look at the schools you mentioned, I don't think I have looked into those yet. Thanks again! :)

Have you applied for any kind of disability with the VA? Do you have any post-9/11 GIB left? If you were able to move and establish residency, that might help, of course, too. I know that out of state tuition can be a killer, but again, check around and see what other schools might offer this. You might have to send some e-mails or make phone calls.

The reason I ask about the VA is because I was able to qualify for vocational rehab, which is an additional year on top of the GIB, and they pay for more than GIB does. I also receive a disability stipend for the rest of my life, in addition to the voc rehab stipend (which is the same as the post-9/11 GIB, not the MGIB stipend).

I haven't applied for disability, but I should… My knees are a reck after Afghanistan. I have been seeing a doctor for it and keeping records of my treatments, but I will have to wait to go back since I am currently studying abroad in Brasil. I have some MGIB left and I plan on using the 12 months of Post 911 for my BSN program. Thanks for the info!

Gather copies of everything from your doctors since your discharge along with your military medical record and your service record and DD214 and head to the VA when you get back, or go through one of the many veteran organizations, as they will help advocate for you and help you navigate the *occasionally* difficult VA. That extra year has saved me so much, and the extra few hundred bucks a month are really nice to count on forever. You've earned it! :)

Brazil, wow! Must be amazing!!

It really is amazing, very chaotic, but definitely a blessing to be here! Oh, I just got an email from Florida International U's Medic to BSN program. Not only are they offering in-state tuition to vets, they are also willing to work with each qualified applicant in an individual basis!
