College of the Canyons Nursing Program Spring 2012

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a thread for COC RN Program for Spring 2012...Anyone who has applied for the upcoming semester, please feel free to join in.

Stats:

This is my first time applying at COC.

I'm a LVN

Received my AS Bio and Phys Sciences degree last June of this year.

My pre-reqs gpa is not good so I'm hoping that my experience will compensate for that.

I also applied at AVC last May and took my TEAS on the same month. So I actually used this score when I applied at COC. My TEAS score is pretty decent so again, I hope that will compensate for my not so good pre-reqs gpa.

So anyway, this is will be a long journey for me with so much anticipation of getting accepted. Can't wait for October when the school releases the result. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

angel2010, I heard that if you have a hard time getting into a chemistry class you can pay to take it through UCLA extension. Most nursing programs accept it. The only problem is the cost. I think it's about $500....just an option to keep you moving forward.

what is ucla extension?

UCLA extension courses are for those who need classes, but are not enrolled as a student at UCLA. Some people who can't get into a science class at their own school can pay to take one of the extension courses at UCLA. Just call the schools that your applying to and verify that they'll accept the units.

thanks for the info:)

I got accepted at AVC!!! I'm giving up my spot for the alternates...Wish you all goodluck!

To Mayelvn:CONGRATULATIONS!!!!:yeah: Good luck to you. Someone on the alternate list for the bridge program is going to be very happy about the open seat.:nurse:

Mainly posting for those with low gpa's:

I was accepted into Spring 2012.

My stats:

Overall GPA 2.89

Pre-req's: never checked prob around or a bit higher than 3.0

BA in Psych

Healthcare experience: EMT 2 years, 1 year in an ambulance and 1 in a theme park.

TEAS test: 95% national percentile

Healthcare experience is a huge plus in my opinion. I've talked to many admission counselors for MSN, BSN and ASN and to summarize they all were saying that having healthcare experience shows your desire to be in this field. So get a job or volunteer to help your chances.

Also to whoever posted saying CoC doesn't have alternates list. They do for the current semester. I.e. spring will have accepted a certain number INTO the program but also have around 20 people ON a "alternate" or waiting list for SPRING only. So no it does not roll over like many colleges

hope this was helpful

HI Shawsta...Congratulations on making it in the program...

FYI...COC does not have a waitlist...They do, however, have an alternate list--which is totally different from a waitlist. If you are on a waitlist, you wait until you get the opportunity to be in the program. Waitlisted people have not necessarily taken the TEAS, they do not have to reapply for the following semester, and are aware of their status on the list because as the list goes up, so does their position. Alternates on the other hand, their status only apply on the same semester they have applied, they do not know their standing on the alternate list, and they have to reapply the following semester if they are not accepted...they are also waiting for the go signal to be seated. Why do you think they are given the opportunity to join orientation sessions? So they can get their stuff ready, just in case someone has decided to drop out of the program...Waitlist people don't get to do that. Having said that, COC does not have a waitlist...Please do not confuse others..

Thank you.

Mayelvn, Thanks for clarifying the difference between wait-list and alternate list. We were told at the orientation that there were over 300 applicants; 50 were chosen and 30 were asked to be on the alternate list. I counted 70 people at the meeting. I still haven't given up hope.

Shawsta, I think your right about having priority to get into the program if you have experience. I have a 4.0 in my sciences with no repeats and a decent GPA, but no experience. I just couldn't find the time to volunteer with a husband, four sons and those crazy science classes.

Hey guys, I declined my seat at COC since I'm going to another school, so hopefully you will get my spot! :)

Hey everyone who was accepted into CoC's RN program! Congratulations on beginning your journey!:yeah: I have been through this rigorous program (just graduated in June of 2011). If there are any questions, I'd be glad to offer support and answers for those starting. Good luck to all of you! :w00t:

Hello CoCStudentNurse,

A close friend of mine has recently started the COC RN nursing program. He's having a hard time keeping up with the readings, so he's chapters behind what the class is currently teaching. He takes a lot of notes as well. Do you have any tips on how to find what's really important in every chapter, and how many chapters in the textbook do you recommend reading a day? How were the tests by the way? Any suggestion is much appreciated. :nurse:
