CNS necessary for NP or not?

Published

Hello!

I am an entry level masters student at San Francisco State University.
After I graduate the ELM program, my plan is to work as a psyche nurse then enter a PMHNP program. I currently work as a counselor at a psyche residential home.

SFSU offers an MSN in psyche, but not a CNS - only peds and adult/gero can get a CNS. My declared specialty is Adult/gero. I'm wondering if I should change my specialty to psyche or if getting a CNS would in adult/gero would be more beneficial because it will help me get into a PMHNP program or some other reason I don't know about yet. Some of my instructors and advisors say CNS is important, and others say it's not.

What are the reasons someone might want to get a CNS?

Thank you!

No, I don't know why anyone would want a CNS.  Get your NP credential.

And it is psych, not "psyche"
