CNM vs. Direct Entry as far as salary goes...

I am wanting to become a DE midwife, and was just wondering if anyone knows the avg salary.:D

Specializes in Labor and Delivery.

I think that is probably hard to predict. It really depends on what state you live in (DEM's are only legal in certain states) and what kind of a practice you can build up, how many patients you can take, etc....

The HB midwife I worked with at one point discussed her salary with me and having a HB practice brought her in about $20k yearly. She charged about $2,000 per birth and took on about 10-12 births a year, I believe. She did say that her husband was the primary income, since they would not be able to live comfortably with two children on that salary.

CNM's who work in a group practice or hospital begin at $60k-80k+ if I am not mistaken.

Hope that helps!

As a DEM I am self employed so I can't think of it as "salary" It is going to be very dependent on where you live and how busy you are. No way to predict. After two full years as a midwife, I am doing pretty well where I live.

There is no average salary for DEMs. On average, though, I'd say you work a lot of hours, but few are billable. Most DEMs I've met from around the country do
