CNM Programs, East Coast - Help!!

Published

Hi everyone,

I am in the middle of figuring out which CNM program to attend and would love to hear some feedback/personal experiences on any of these programs. I plan on applying to SUNY Downstate, NYU, Yale, UC San Fran, and U Penn.

Unfortunately, finacing my MSN will be a big decision factor. I received my BSN from NYU (15 month program) and graduated w/my nursing degree and >$80,000 in student loan debt (combined debt from 2 bachelor degrees). Obviously, I can't take out any more student loans!

It has been my dream to be a midwife FOREVER and I want to get to that point asap (hence the pricey 15mo. BSN). Any suggestions on financing CNM programs and/or what the NY State school/SUNY CNM program is like?

Thank you!!

aspireCNM,

I checked, and the limit for stafford loans for graduate study is $138,500. (This includes your undergrad loans.) Even though you're already starting with high debt, this still leaves you with a borrowing eligibility around $50,000. That's not including any scholarships, fellowships, etc.

Also, if you take a job with an eligible provider in a community that is in need of providers through the government, they can repay a large portion of those loans.

I don't have any info about any of the institutions you asked about, I just enrolled at Frontier. I know if you have your BSN there and go full time , it costs $26,400 to get your MSN in midwifery in 2 years.

I know there are many other programs, I just wanted to give you the one example I know off the top of my head that combines a reputable program with a reasonable cost. Good Luck! :)

Stonybrook (SUNY) also has a CNM program and their tuition is pretty cheap.
