CNA DIARY - A patient fell down

Today is my first day ( we work four days and have two days off ) to get back to work. After finishing distribuing the clothes to their cabinets, I started changing their diapers. When I was working on room 216, I heard big sound hitting the floor; I ran out of the room and checked other immediate rooms. I found a patient lying down on the floor and her forehead was bleeding. I was shocked and rushed to the station and called charged nurses for help. We put the patient to the bed and they began treatments. About an hour later, the ambulance came and she was sent to the hospital.

I felt upset all day long. As a nursing assistant, we have to take care of fourteen patients in evening shift which is from 2pm to 10pm. For this patient, I changed her diaper and put both side rails up. Her head was raised up and her feet too. I could not figure out why and how did she slide down to the floor. Most of our patients here are with G tube or confused. To be honest, it's a big pressure to us to handle fourteen patients in a shift because some patients even playing pu pu, so we need to take extra time for cleaning.

I pray she will recover soon but I wish someday we could reduce our patients to ten or under for each nursing assistant, so we have more time to watch out our patients.

I know how you feel. I think I do best when my load is 9 residents. This weekend I had 11 and they were all very needy. Today I had 3call bells going off when I was finishing changing a resident & preparing to put her in her wheelchair via hoyer lift. So I lowered her bed as far as possible and quickly toileted everyone. 15 minutes later, I go back to her room & she's on the ground :( I go to the nurses station, tell her nurse & her nurse goes all irate! When we get back to her room, she starts yelling at the resident "**** why did you even try to get up knowing that you cant? Do you know what you've done to me? Now I have to do 2 hours of paperwork thanks to you! You know damn well you cant stand!!"

I know that its a frustrating situation; no one likes dealing with a fall. But seriously, yelling at the resident?:eek::eek::eek:

Holy cow MiiszKimberlyCNA.. I would report that to a supervisor of some sort. I can't even imagine a nurse yelling at a patient like that.. That breaks my heart.

I dont trust the RN Supervisor either. He & the LPN's are bffs. And I'm just a lowly aide:crying2:

There has got to be someone you can go to higher up. Even as a "lowly aide" you should advocate for your residents. Think of putting your parents or grandparents into care like that-- that shouldn't even be an option. Ya know? These people are putting their lives into hands like that.. makes me sick.

It doen't matter how many patients you have. You could have three and the risk of falling is always there. Its not always the CNA\Nurses fault. If you put the rails up, left the bed in a low position and put everything this patient needed within reach, then your not responsible. It just happens sometimes. Don't beat yourself up about it. It's a part of the job.:heartbeat

I think I will call the ombudsman.
