Are there any NICU nurses out there who work at Carolina's Medical Center? If so I have some questions...I will be starting there after I graduate and I am curious about a few things. In your opinion, how well can I expect to be prepared when I come off of orientation and what things would be best for me to buy? Books, stethoscope, where the best place is to buy uniforms, etc? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I just clicked on this site because i start at CMC nursing school in Aug. and wanted to find out if it was possible to graduate from ADN program and go into NICU. I guess it is. Any suggestions on how to better my chances of doing what you did? Do you have any previous experience or did you work as an NA or tech during school?

I can reply to both posts. While I do not work in the NICU at CMC as an RN, I do work in the PICU. Previously, I worked as a unit secretary in the Peds division and worked in that capacity alot in the NICU (I oriented a lot of their secretaries).

Yes, they hire new grads into the NICU. Several in my class (around 10 or 12) were hired. They do have a fairly comprehensive orientation program for new grads. The NICU doesn't really have NAs.

I've floated to the NICU a couple of times - it was okay - very different from what I'm used to in the PICU. With RSV season, the PICU census has been very high, so no floats in awhile.

If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to PM me.
