Hello!Â* I am considering enrolling in Chamberlain's online FNP program.Â* Has anyone completed this program?Â* How did you go about getting a clinical placement?Â* Is there sometimes a cost for clinicals?Â* Did you find that there are NP's out there who are receptive to having a student?Â* I am in Jacksonville FL, near many hospitals and medical centers but I don't have any connections within the medical community.Â*[/quote']Preceptorships nationwide are in high demand right now d/t the sheer number of NP students right now. I can't speak specifically for your area but you should definitely do some research before starting school; I would try and have 4-5 preceptors lined up ahead of time.
Now is a great time to shadow NPs and start making local contacts. Join your state NP association and that may help you make some contacts.
Building your network within the medical community is an ongoing job that should be started ideally before you even apply to a program. To attempt to do it while doing school full time and probably working is going to be very difficult. One reason this is difficult is it takes time for people to build up a trust and respect for you, until they do, you are just another person asking for a favor. Start small, just making contacts, maybe shadowing, letting people know what your plans are. Then once you have gained their trust, you can start to ask for more favors, contacts, introductions, etc. This is a task that will take a small amount of your time every week or two, but will pay you back in many ways. You will have a network for school projects if needed, you will obviously have a network to call upon to get preceptors. You will use this network once you start looking for your first job, and again when you are practicing.
I'm in Chamberlain's FNP program, and will be starting clinicals in October (I live in California). I have not secured a preceptor yet, but I have been assigned a fantastic clinical coordinator at the school who has been calling potential preceptors on my behalf. A couple of facilities have given her a "maybe," so we're just waiting to see if those come through. I'm thankful that the school provides some assistance with finding preceptors. Good luck! :)
