clinical instructor versus didactic instructor pay

Published

Hi there,

The nurses on my unit were discussing the current nursing world issues and one that came up was the shortage of nurses. I know a lot of that has to do with limited number of spots in nursing schools due to limited number of nursing faculty.

We are wondering what the average pay is for a clinical instructor for nursing students is (the ones who are at the hospital watching over the students) and a didactic instructor (the ones who teach the courses in nursing school) just to understand why things are the way they are right now.

Thank you for your help!

As a previous didaction instructor, now a clinical instructor, I make the same amount.  However, going from practicing RN in a hospital to teaching, I took a $20,000/year cut to teach.  I think that is outrageous.

I feel like I need to chime in here. I am a full-time nurse educator, and I receive 65K a year. I provide didactic and clinical instruction for a first-year cohort in a rural ADN college with a BSN option.  I am returning to the bedside this semester because the location I am teaching at is fairly toxic, and my new position will pay me 51/hr.  This equates to just under 100K working 3 days a week.  Yes, education is a calling, but I also have bills to pay.  No, I do not get summers off, but I also will not be working 6 to 7 days a week teaching, grading, and preparing.  I love my education, but bedside is going to fit my life better right now.

I too am returning to the bedside now, hopefully at my old place of work, in a different position, as I faced the same toxicity in teaching.
