how much does a clinic nurse make?

As mentioned before, pay rates depend on the part of the country you live in. Yes, there are parts of the country where clinic nurses only get $12 unfortunately. There is a lot of competition for them so the employer has the upper hand. You have to decide if the trade off is good enough. Clinic nurses as a whole usually work only 8 hours days, 5 days a week, no weekends, no holidays, little lifting, & a whole lot less stress. They don't have to take care of 6 (or more) patients at one time, or pass meds to 50 as some do in LTC. So far, I've not been pooped on, peed on, vomited on, and have not had one die on me. Now I suppose that can happen but so far so good. And the heaviest thing I have had to lift is a portable nebulizer machine, maybe 10 lbs?

I make 2/3 of what I made at my last job. For me the trade off was difinately worth it.

this is for the person that said the trade of was worth it. you said you're a clinic nurse, right? what kind of things of responsibilities do you have? how much do you make if you don't mind telling.

OK, I wasn't going to be the one who admitted it but if you look back to my first post, I mentioned that my state had the lowest paid nurses in the nation. I am a new LPN & I started last January at $11.89 an hour. I don't like that pay but still would rather make it than to work under the pressure & conditions that my cohorts who work in the hospital & LTC.

My responsibilities - I work as a float, filling in for any of the providers' nurses. I do everything that the regular nurse does. I room patients, take vital signs & weights. I check for allergies & meds that the patient is taking & chart that information, I find out the reason they are there & ask questions pertaining to that problem, charting that also. I get the room ready for procedures from PAPs to minor traumas and assist as needed. I call in prescriptions (chart them), answer phone calls from patients, nursing homes, & other doctors, call patients with results of labs & tests. I give injections, swab throats, nebulizer treatments, flush ears, TB tests, etc. Saturday I helped cast a child's broken arm. I fill out forms- goldenrods, lab & X-ray forms, forms for when we give out med samples, referral forms, work release forms, physical forms. Chart, chart, & chart some more. I provide patient education. I schedule colonoscopies & EGDs with the hospital. Escort patients to the lab or X-ray (in same building). Talk to drug reps. Oh, and for one doctor, I actually make coffee. Some of the nurses do EKGs & stress tests.

I mentioned that I am a LPN. There are RNs who also work at the clinic and they do the same things I mentioned above. The only job they do that I am not "qualified" to do during the week is working as triage nurse. However, we supply convenient care hours on the weekend & I work every other weekend. I take triage calls then. Our RN's make more than I do but I have no idea how much.

My friends who work in smaller clinics who don't have labs also draw blood & run some lab tests such as pregnancy tests & urine. Some of the jobs I do are done by medical assistants in some clinics. We don't have any at our clinic.

I'm sure there are more things I do but this is what I cam e up with off the top of my head.

To Dixie. Do you think I should continue with Nursing? I'm still in Nursing school, I have a year left but is stressed out because I don't know if I will be good at doing the skills. I don't know at this point if i should go forward or start something new. I feel lost right now. Do you think it's worth it to go all the way. do you like working as a nurse? any advice or ideas!

I can't tell you what to do; only you know what's best for you. As far as the skills go, understand that most of us have trouble learning them & that no matter where you start working, you won't be expected to know everything. You'll do most of your learning on the job.

I love my job. I only wish I had been able to go to nursing school when I was young. I'm not planning to bridge to RN since I'm doing what I want to do. I have health issues of my own that prevent me from doing work that requires a lot of lifting & being on my feet. My supervisor has been great about my health problems, even scheduling me so that I could continue working even during chemo treatments.

Good luck. I hope you make the right decision for you.

Well for LVN's it'a 14.00-18.00.

My husband thinks RN's make about 28.00/Hr in clinics, I think it's more like 24.00-26.00/Hr
