CLEP exams for EC ASN general requirement

Published

Hi everyone,

I think I may want to start a thread here for this subject. I did post on the other thread and know that Analyzing Lit in CLEP will count 6 credits toward EC's Humanities. I am currently planning to get the general requirement done first but would like to go CLEP as much as I can (much cheaper compare to ECE). I would also not be able to get advising from them because I'm not a LPN yet therefore I can't enroll or get any advise. I want to be proactive and get part of the EC ASN stuffs done.

If you have used CLEP to satisfy the EC general requirement, could you please share which CLEP exam they accepted for your ASN degree? I have the following list on my mind and please tell me if these works -

Analyzing Lit

Human Growth and Dev

Intro to Psychology

College Algebra

I believe I need more than the above (I will be taking EngComp at a local college), please comment.

Thanks.

- Alex

Before you go further, please make sure that your state will allow you to sit the boards with an ADN from Excelsior. I think there may be a problem for Florida residents.

Thanks for the reminder. I spent the past hour in the FL state board and the EC site and can't find any information about not allowing EC students to take FL state board. The only information is the state board requires be an LPN before it will accept the candidate for exam. I think EC will not take me as a student of their ADN program if I'm not already a LPN. Can anyone confirm this is correct? Thanks. - Alex

They require you have medical experience LPN EMT LVN etc. Look under prospective nursing student info.

I've printed out the EC nursing FAQ as well as the FL state board lic exam requirement and just can't find anywhere they required me to submit an experience eval. In EC FAQ, they mentioned "you must already be an LPN before applying for licensure." So, I think as long as you're a LPN and EC accepts you into the ADN program, you should be eligible to sit for the FL state board exam. I did a search on the FL state board web site and didn't find any document that they disallow EC students to sit for RN state exam. The only information concering EC is those EC graduates entered into the program prior to 8/10/1994 are eligible or those already were LPN when they enroll into the program and had integrated theory and clinical, will be considered for licensure. So, I believe this is OK. Anyone has any thoughts on this?

Alex - the Florida BON will not allow anyone who is not already an LPN sit for boards as a graduate of the EC ASN program. I had several friends that were EMT's and Paramedics and RRT's that were not considered qualified to sit for the Florida State Board. Please call the Florida BON before you enroll. Please do not think that just because EC accepts you into their program that you will automatically qualify to sit boards when you graduate. This has been a huge debate in Florida and at this time, the only eligible EC graduates who can take boards are those that were an LPN prior with prior medical experience. Good Luck.

Thanks for your information. I'm going to call them to find out. A friend of mine is taking LPN and want to go EC ASN afterwards then sits for FL RN state exam. By reading all the related web sites, I think it will work. But regarding LPN sits for RN exam after graduate from EC, there is no words about it. And there is also no words about how many more clinical hours after LPN licensure to be eligible for RN exam.

Back to my original question, do anyone know if EC also accepts the CLEP Natural Science exam?

Thanks for all the good info !

Yes, EC will accept it for general science credit worth 6 credits but you will still need the nursing sciences, anatomy and physiology. I don't know if they required a chemistry. You need a cross cultural, algebra, statistics. These are what I remember off the top of my head. You also need lifespan development and I think general psych. I know that if you go to the nursing chapter in their on-line course book it will tell you exactly what you need. I think the nursing course book on line has about 100 pages to it.

As I said, I'm going to EC to finish a BS in Psychology, not nursing, so I'm not your expert. Hopes this helps, I know their website is not intuitive. I've spent literally hours on it trying to figure out what I need to finish my degree before spending the money to enroll.

Thanks. That's good to know. I am planning to use the CLEP general science for elective. I did the sample test on the college board clep guide and already hitting 65% without studying so I think I'll take this advantage. Tks. - alex

If you are hitting a raw score of 65% schedule and set the exam. You will score probably in the 85th percentile. Good luck to you. :)

I don't think EC requires an algebra or statistics course for the adn, maybe for the bsn. I haven't taken any of the science/bio cleps, let us know how you make out.

Good Luck

You may be right, I may be thinking of the BSN at EC. Sorry if I misled you.
