Cincinnati Pay Rates/Great Oaks Program

Hello. I graduated 8/10/06 from Laurel Oaks in Wilmington. I LOVED the program. Our teachers were the BEST one could ask for. After graduating, the class did go their own ways. Those that I have stayed in touch with seem to be making an income in the range of $17-$21 per hour. It depends what shift you work, if you are PRN, FT or PT, and if you need benefits. Also, location has a factor. If you work more in the city areas, pay is higher. Plus, consider tuition reimbursement & benefits. I got a job with Vitas. I dont make as much as some of the third shift nursing home people, but health insurance for myself & spouse on costs me $130 per month, which includes optical, dental, life insurance and presciption cards. PLUS I get 224 PAID HOURS OFF in the first year. I work every other weekend. This is what works for me.... Good luck to you. I wish you the best. :balloons:

The pay is anywhere from 12-20 depending on where you want to work. Hospitals pay the least from 12-14. LTC is 16-19.
If you are wondering about great oaks, I am currently attending Laurel Oaks in Wilmington. I would have to say I enjoy all but one instructor. The rules are absolutely ridiculous, you cant sit more than 6 per table at lunch. Nothing but water in the classroom (7 hours a day). If you are one minute late they take an hour off of your time and you are only allowed to miss like 14 or so hours per quarter. I was put on probation for missing 10 hours in the second quarter even though I was permitted to miss 14 hours, (the reason is percentages My attendance for the quarter was 94 and some odd percent so far that quarter). If you have an issue and you talk to them they do not change anything in fact it seems they just penalize the rest of the class by making it harder for everyone. After each clinical there is about 6-7 hours worth of paper work so I dont get much sleep. I am exhausted all the time, my grades are excellent but I am so tired its hard to stay awake for 7 hours. Oh yeah and I have to wear those dingy white uniforms which you cant bleach because they have patches that will turn brown on them. We had a teacher from the high school tell us that we werent allowed to talk on the phone during lunch because the high school students would want to know why they werent allowed to use their phones. Another student was wrapped in a blanket because she is cold all the time and apparently thats a big no no because of the high school students. The housekeeping for the class and lab are done by the students, taking out trash and vacuuming. Everyone in my class feels as if they are back in high school all over again. Parking is horrible and they changed their parking policy atleast three times that I am aware of and I am still confused as to where we are supposed to park. I am a smoker and no smoking on grounds, we have to leave. No smoking at all at some sites and some places are 12 hour clinicals. You cannot leave clinicals for lunch either. Each instructor likes paper work to be done differently so you have to learn a new way every quarter. Not to mention that you have absolutely no say in where you go for clinicals and some students have to drive 2 hours each way to clinicals. Next quarter I have to drive 1.5 hours each way. Our clinical sites range from Lebanon, Xenia, Morrow, Georgetown, Wilmington, Sabina, and Childrens. You cannot pick or suggest where you go no matter how close or far away you are.
I am not sure whether I would suggest it or not, if I had known about this before I went I would not have attended. They do tell you this the first day but it doesnt seem so bad until you are actually in the middle of it with all the stress of tests and paperwork and trying to get everything done. I would demand my money back and tell these people where to shove it. If they want adults to go to their school, they should treat the students as adults, and not like some grade-schooler.

they are not all like the Great Oaks in cincy was nice...they may be starting an LPN to RN school soon

OMG...r u serious? I am an adult, and would NEVER want to be treated like a child...and from everything you say, it sounds as if they are running some kind of grade school. Absolutly rediculous!!!!!!!!
I am also researching different schools for someone, and I will tell everyone to stay far, far away from these Oaks schools. I would NOT put up with it. I would demand my money back and tell these people where to shove it. If they want adults to go to their school, they should treat the students as adults, and not like some grade-schooler.

I wouldn't take all of the message you replied to as gospel. I went throught the program at Laurel the year before this person. The instructors were wonderful and went out of their way to help if someone needed it (same instructors are still there). There were students that had issues with the teachers but those were the students that caused the issues by their own behaviors. C & J were not demeaning and did not treat the students like children even though we had students that acted like children and there always seemed to be drama going on.

Insofar as the silly rules, sure some of them were a bit stringent but the instructors are only abiding by the rules that have been set forth by the school system. It's hardly fair to fault the instructors for following regulations that have been set forth to them to be passed on to the students.

Yes the clinical paperwork was somewhat difficult but now that I am transitioning to RN, it was a walk in the park. He's complaining about that little 2-3 page care plan? Let's see, our process tool/care plan is 45 pages (yes, forty five) and I have to do them weekly. If I get a new patient, there's a shorter form but it's still a lot of work. Also, we're only allowed to have water in our classrooms in college so what's the difference? He makes a huge issue about the long day with only water? We had the same rule but we got breaks throughout the day and could drink soda on break. Insofar as the smoking issue - it is illegal to smoke on school property in the state of Ohio - so of course they can't smoke by the building. Just go to your car during breaks and take a quick drive. That's what we did.

I'm not sure this guy would be happy with anything. Please don't judge the Oaks program based on the opinion of one person.

I am sorry if you do not understand perhaps you should read what i said, I never attacked all the instructors. As far as the care plans, I understand they are necessary, it was the timing and when they are due that I had a problem with. because of clinicals at the hospital we didnt get an early start like others at nursing homes because we didnt know who our patients were. Therefore making them due the next day was the problem I had with them.

I to love J & C. still talk to them often. They are awesome. But that still doesnt change that the program itself and its mostly the administration are crayZ. Seems to me you are attacking my views, which I have a right to. Maybe you see things differently than myself and thats cool. But from what I hear many of the more strict rules and reasons for crazy rules was because your class #2 was had MANY MANY issues. That comes from what your classmates say. And yes the rules were made for high schoolers. Like no talking on phones on lunch break and no sitting more than 6 to a table. no drink or snacks. Give me a break. I did have an issue with an instructor but we have since resolved that issue and In my opinion have become very kind toward each other, I would even consider her my friend.

I am valid in what i see and my point of view. The instructors themselves never treated me like a kindergardener, it was the rules set by the administration that made me feel that way. Never said anything about being talked down to or anything like that. And as far as your care plans in RN school compared to LPN, this wasnt RN school and I am glad that you are going on, but again Laurel Oaks and your school have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Funny thing is that now I am an LPN I am not even allowed to write care plans per the board nursing.

Regardless if you are going to attack what I say please attack it for the reasons stated, I never attacked all the instructors themselves, and I never fussed about length of cre plans but my fuss was when they were due.

Also I would appreciate it if you would not make assumptions about what I would or would NOT be satisfied with. You do not know me and should not make assumptions about me based on a thread you read. If you loved everything about the program then thats great. I on the other hand was stating my view and certain facts about rules and how they made me feel.

If you want to express your opinion thats cool but dont attack me and my views.
