Hi!
I am new here and just starting to take 3 years worth of pre reqs to get into a nursing program. All in all, this is going to take me 5 years to finish. I am currently planning to go to a University that offers the nursing program nights and weekends (so I can work), but take most of my pre reqs at the community college.
Is 5 years too long? I am already 26. I am thinking about looking into a career college, Brown Mackie. It will take less time, only be an associates, but I can bridge later. Will hospitals look down on my credentials if I go to a school like this?
Any other suggestions for getting started in general would help, thanks!

Why 3 years worth of prereqs? That seems awfully long. As far as 5 years being too long, all I can say is that the end justifies the means. Not sure about hospitals' opinions on career college. As far as I know, and RN is and RN as long at you have passed the NCLEX. I would check on the school's accreditation though. How much will the CC shorten your path?
3 years because I need to go part time. I'm going to find out tomorrow how long the career college will take. I just need to make sure I can bridge to a BSN later with there program.

I'm 33 with 3 boys going back to finally do this. You have to do what you can do. Maybe things will change and you can add more classes and work less. You never know. Definitely check out all accreditations with the schools. Other than that a RN is a RN. You can do it! Don't look at the time it takes, just know your working toward your goal.

I know plenty of people who have spent 8 years or so getting their BSN. It's better to spend more time in school and really learn instead of rushing through with it to get done and then not knowing enough to practice.

I started pre reqs back in 2008 going part time and got accepted to the clinical portion and started Jan 2011. I'm in a part time ADN program and I will be finished in 2013. 5 YEARS. Sounds like forever but it actually goes quite fast! I am a mother of four children, 13, 8, 6, and 5. This is the way I had to do it. I so can't wait to be a nurse. You can do it if you put your mind to it. Good luck!
