I am hoping that someone could help me with a couple of homework questions, here goes.
Use the density value to solve the folowing problems.
1. A graduated cylinder contains 18.0 mL of water. What is the new water level after 35.6 g of silver metal with a density of 10.5 g/mL is submerged in the water?
What I did was divide 10.5 g/mL into 35.6 g and came up with an answer of 3.3 mL. I then added 18.0 mL and 3.3 mL and my answer was 21.3 mL. Is this correct?
2. A thermometer containing 8.3 g of mercury has broken. If mercury has a density of 13.6 g/mL, what volume spilled?
What I did for this question was divide 8.3 g into 13.6 g/mL and came up with an answer of .61 mL. Is this correct? I got the answer by using a calculator and I think it is wrong. When I use the basics of division of decimals, the dot between the 8 and 3 should be moved to the right one spot and the same should be done with the dot between the 3 and the 6. The answer then would be 1.59 mL. Which is correct?
I am not the world's greatest math student but I will keep plugging away at what I need to learn.
Edit: I now think I did the second question wrong using "basics of decimals". I'd redo it but my boss is lurking the grounds.

I graduated with a chem degree, so this post was fun! :)
You did both questions correctly.
1. D = m/v
10.5 g/ml = 35.6 g / vol
vol = 3.39 ml
New height = 18ml + 3.39ml = 21.39ml
2. D = m/v
v = m/D
v = 8.3 g / (13.6 g/ml)
v = 0.61 ml
Thank you very much for the help :wink2: .

I am having the same problem in Chemistry, actually the whole class is. Out of a class of 20 only 1 passed our first Chem. test. So tomorrow I have to re-take it and i am not looking forward to it. Chemistry is a different language to me!

Oh how I HATE chemistry!!!!! I took inorganic chem spring quarter and I hated all the math that was involved! Reading your questions made my stomach turn...it brought back bad memories.
Leopardspots 85 the good thing to know is that if you study hard and utilize study groups you should do well. As much as I struggled (and it was alot) I still managed to get a 4.0.
Anyway I am in organic chem now and there is not nearly as much math but it is still so hard! I will be SOOOOOO GLAD when I get this quarter over with! Unfortunately it just started. I am ike Leopardspots85, chem is a totally different language. Good luck to you!
