TIPS/Info for passing NCLEX
KAPLAN can be a gigantic waste of time. Use your CDs. Here are some facts about nursing you should ALWAYS remember: 1. In nursing, ASSESSMENT comes first 2. ABCs mean airway before breaths before circulation 3. If its out of your scope of practice, dont do it. 4. Patient care always comes first......... 5. Nurses DONOT delegate assessment and teaching 6. If it ends with an ..ol, its probably a B-blocker 7. With hip issues, leg abduction is almost always the right choice 8. Peroxide does wash blood out pretty good 9. Chlrohexidine is best 10. If the infectious agent starts with myco - it probably doesnt require contact precautions. I think these 10 should help anyone studing for the NCLEX or just trying to remember basic facts of nursing. Overwhelmed about nursing school
Most Nursing schools recommend that students dont work while in school. However, some of my classmates are working and holding up just fine. I would not reccommend LPN program unless you cant take any other routes. Not because LPNs are worse off in anyway, but if you want to be an RN, you will have to go back to school anyway, so might as well give it your best try the first time around. Here is the thing, I'm sure you've heard that most people are surprised about the school load in Nursing, and let me say, the load is truly big. Even if you dont work during the School years, you will still wonder how you will finish the assigned readings before your Lectures. Now, they can be really enjoyable, dont get me wrong, specially if you LOVE nursing, but very much TIME CONSUMING!

pre-reqs need help
Hi, I am a BSN student in Virginia and I have gone through three colleges and many months of planning for the Nursing school (I've finally made it, WOOHOO, you will too)!! Many schools are different and I'm sure you know that different schools have different rules, however, let me tell you about my school, I think this goes for most colleges/universities. My school required the application by Feb 1st, to start in the fall, that puts many people in a bad situation who are still working on their prereqs in the Spring. So many people asked, and the way it works here is they select you STRICTLY by you GPA, and you have to send them your final grades for Spring semester when you are done. Ofcourse they have the right to pull your acceptance if you completely mess up your Spring semester, but yes, the university does select allowing you to finish prereqs afterwards. How much muscle do the folks have who have ALL the prereqs done by the time they apply over those who need another semester is a separate question, one that you should ask the school you are applying to. Hope that helps, keep up with your GPA, the nursing school wont care if you are a great athlete, and selection is tough!!

be kind to your CNAs
Everyone needs to be respected and everyone needs to respent everyone else. Its a two way street, and guess what, in the middle of it all, pts are depending on the nursing team to TAKE CARE OF THEM!! Like the above responder already said, it is an innate human issue, however, if not for the sake of peace, respect, or coop, at least for the PT's sake the team must learn to respect each other. Last note on CNAs, CNAs will always be subjected to some form of maltreatment simply because of the innate human nature and because companies value retaining a nurse more then a CNA, therefore Nurses have more freedom to pump there pulp! The above is totally demonstrable and not just my humble private opinion!

Venting about weekend nurses!
Hi, I'm a BSN student but I'm also a CNA/MA vet, and have lots of experience in Ward/Clinical settings. Reading your post troubled me, specially since you cant really expect to take good care of pts if you are doing more than 10 pts her shift. 30 pts is unthinkable to me, and is a major blemish on the professional nurses who supervise you, since they really should know better. I would assess what they do in their free time, because if in fact you are ALL running amock, then I'd get on the supervising official, maybe even go beyond him/her. Remember, CNAs have a voice, you have rights just like the nurses do, you're not going to make a friend, but you should seek to nip this kind of an issue in the behind quickly, like you said, pts are at stake. On the further note, it is a job of a nurse as well as a CNA to do ALL those things you do as well, I/O,VS,BS,Bedpans, bedbaths, etc, Or perhaps some of them need to be sent back to school. I'm not trying to rouse a passion for rebellion, but I am saying be smart, I think every system has leniency towards those who "just do that right thing" once in a while!

My father is getting a stem cell transplant, any feedback on if this will work ?
Its hard to say with AML, along with many other forms of... I dont like the 50/50 estimate, nor any other estimates, because each person is an individual and whatever happens is 100% for him/her. We had patients stay in our hospital for months, some receiving over 4 transplants (yeah), others walked out quite healthy after only one. As far as prayers go, they are a must, they are not a game, God is very real and he answers those who call on him, I have seen it, been there, witnessed it. Finally: I hope your father recovers well, I know its much harder for much older folks. Considering how many people are praying for him, I'm sure that divine provision will reach him one way or another! Take care!

What is your biggest nursing pet peeve?
Sometimes my nerves are tickled when another nurse is not doing anything, but will still come to me and ask me if I can get some patient information booklets straightened out. Oh and that call light thing, I'm really glad I'm not working on a Ward anymore, 'cause that used to drive me off the wall!
