Chemistry classes?

In my BSN we had to take and Organic/Biochem mixed class. Some may require you take both...I would take a mix if you can. That way when you get to school some of the stuff will atleast look familiar.

I took a 5 credit combo organic/biochem class I think it was Chem 108 but definitely a lower level chem class and it helped me immensely during the first semester. I recommend that class and the 2 general chem classes should prepare you well enough. Now that being said some schools require upper level chem classes so you would need to check the school for the requirements.

Hello, i am new to this group and have just started an BSN nursing program. My goal, like many of ya'll that view and use this site is to become an CRNA. I have been talking to CRNAs in my area and on websites like these, so i have a good idea of that i need to do to become an SRNA and what is exspected of me. Yet, i was wondering how many of ya'll had take organic chemistry or if you knew about how many of your peers in school had taken it? If so did you or others really find that had taken organic chemistry was really benifical or would have been? I know that most of the schools in my state or neightbor states don't requier it; yet, they suggest it because some SRNAs had found it helpful. Thank you for any comments that are suggested. :)

Thank you, to all that replied to my question. Your comments will be taken inconsideration, and is an important factor in my process in becoming a CRNA. It is such an great feeling to have people so will to give info, go out of their way, and willing to give advise to others wanting to enter the program about what they would have done.

Anyone else have to take two years Chem to get INTO the nursing program or am I alone?

For one reason, this is why i posted the comment. The area, and neighboring states, have just chanced the requirement of chemistry(which was before, an organic or bio chem.) which is why i am looking for not only advice but as well why? One thing that you may want to look at is the TWU and TCU site now in your area.

Oh, ok, so it's been a recent change. I looked into TWU but my GPA will only be bout 3.4 /3.5. And another thing is my bf and I have been long distance for going on five years. Not that I wouldn't do another two for school, but if I can get the degree from San Antonio, I would rather.

They introduced a Biochem at the community college I am attending now (North Harris County), but I doubt I can get into Chem II with it, which is what I'll need for UT in San Antonio.

Any thoughts?

Let me restate that i am not a SRNA or CRNA, i have only the info from sites like this, talking to CRNAs in my area, ect.

First, if your GPA is a 3.4/3.5 that could be plenty, you should know that no program relies on only GPA. It will be an overall picture of GPA, GRE, reference, and ect. If you look at other replies you will find that some SRNAs have gotten in to the program with just a GPA of 3.2 and it was the other requirements that pulled them up.

Secund, if you are worried about you bf, which is understandable about loveones, you need to understand that this will be a personal desition and only you can overall make it. Yet, if it has been five yrs. would another 2 and 1/2 yrs. would really be a problem? This is really only a problem that you could answer, no matter what is suggested, and you have to factor the CRNA program is to you. My oppion is that a bf that waited five yrs. will understand another two if it was something that you have wanted to purse.

Third, you say that you are not sure that with the biochem. class you can get into chem II? This sounds like an organic/biochem class which to my understanding is nothing compared to what you face in a CRNA program. Yet, i have heard that this general class atleast gives you some very very basic understanding or look familiar.

My suggestion, which i do not think that will disagree by others, is to take the chemII it you have taken, and understand, chem I. Then comes organic which most programs want (like UTH).

Fourth, there is no program in SA. There is a UT program in Houston. But if you are worried about biochem, which they do not require anymore, i would still suggest it after posting this comment and talking to other CRNAs.
