Chem Spring 2008

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all,

Hoping to start a Chem study group for Spring 2008. I do not begin class until January 15th but figured I would see about getting a group together as soon as possible.

welcome to the chem group maria! :yeah: everyone here is very helpful and positive! there is a lot of information on this forum that will help you through the class as you go along. one of the best things that i did to help me through my chemistry class is to purchase the "cliff study solver - chemistry." going through the problems in your textbook along with the study solver will help you understand things a lot better. i wish you luck in your class! pm if you have any questions. :nuke:

i'm feeling ur pain tlaspires.....i asked my instructor regarding the word problems as well. she said the best way to look at it is to find..

1. what is the given in the problem.

2. what are they asking for in the answer

3. is there conversions involved? ensure to follow the steps for conversions that are needed.

hopefully this helps a little bit....this has helped me in some of the problems. good luck. :)

:nuke: :nuke: oh, thank you so much!!!! i just checked out the book you recommended on amazon and i'm feeling a lot better already - it looks just like what i needed! i'm going to order it first thing tomorrow! thanks for the warm welcome and encouragement ! - i do believe this is one of the best websites i've ever found! everyone here is so nice and its nice to know there are people who can relate to how hard it is to get into nursing school! :heartbeat:heartbeat

Ok I need some calculator help here. When using Avagdro's number (6.02 x 10 23rd) to calculate molar mass what do I type in the calculator to make it work. I'm doing something wrong here and my midterm is Weds!

you're very welcome. i'm really glad that you think it will be helpful. i use mine all the time to help me through the chapters and prepare for exams. i wish you the best!! :wink2:

so, at class tonight we began going over stoichiometry...i may have spelt that wrong and also word problems. the suggestion that my instructor gave above really helped me to look through the problems and be able to solve them quite easily.

here are some examples.....

mol to mol (typically this is a 1 step problem)

how many moles of sodium will react with water to produce 4.0 mol of hydrogen in the following reactions?

2na + 2h2 ---------> 2naoh + h2

1st - what's the given? 4.0 mol of hydrogen

2nd - what are they asking for? moles of sodium (na)

start off with your given:

4.0 mol h2 x 2 mol of na = 8.0 mol of na

.................... 2 mol of h2

when you look at the fraction of 2 mol of na and 2 mol of h2 - this is the mole ration. using the coefficients from the equations allows me to see what the mole ratio is for the problem...thus giving us 8.0 mol of na.

2. mol to mass (typically a 2 step problem)

phosphorus burns in air to produce a phosphorus oxide in the following reactioin.

4p + 5 o2 ---------> p4o10 (p small 4, o small 10)

what mass of phosphorus will be needed to produce 3.25 mol of p4o10?

given: 3.25 mol p4o10

looking for? mass (in grams) of phosphorus.

3.25 mol p4o10 x 4 mol p x 31 g p = 403 g p

.......................... 1 mol p4o10.......1mol p

hopefully the above helps a little for anyone. there are two other types of equations as well.... mass to mol and mass to mass. let me know if you need other help let me know. :wink2:

heya itsa....

depending on your calculator....to get the exponent on a ti 80 - hit ee.

i'm sorry i can't help on the more expensive calculator.. =o(.

good luck!

no that's perfect, i have a ti30 and that worked too but for some reason it comes up with a different exponant so here's the problem and tell me what you think

1.75 mole nh3 x 6.02 x 10 23 molecules nh3 = 1.05 x 10 24 molecules

______________________

1 mole nh3

so when i do it on my calculator i get 1.05 x 10 25 for the answer. any ideas? thanks soo much!

Hiya Itsa,

Your answer is correct. :yeah:

It does give a different exponent because when you multiply the problem out, the decimal moves over one stop thus giving you 10 24.

So when I do this for class I will need to subtract 1 exponant to get the correct answer?

No. As long as you have your equation written out correctly and with the use of a calculator.....you will get the correct answer.

I find it easier to multiply everything on top then multiply everything on the bottom before dividing.

ex:

50.5 g HCl x 1 mol HCl x 2 mol H = Multiply the top: 101

....................36.5g HCl x 1 mol HCl Multiply the bottom: 36.5

So now you have 101/36.5 = 2.77 mol H.

Using Avagadro's number - 6.02 x 10 23 will be the same way except with the exponent involved. When looking at your problem, don't let the exponents throw you off, the calculator will help you through to solve the problem. Hopefully this made sense... :wink2:

So after all that trying to figure it out on the calculator it wasn't even on the midterm! It was soo hard though. My teacher always throws me on his quizzes and tests. I got 10pts wrong for things that weren't on the study guide, and he only briefly covered. They weren't hard, I just didn't know the answer. Then I made another 4pt mistake that was just a stupid error. :banghead: Thankfully I did 15pts of extra credit work so we'll see how this all works out. This class is driving me nutty! Anyone else feel like me? My teacher said tonight when I handed in my test...."well, your half way done." It feels like I have been in this class FOREVER already!

I can't wait to be done with this class. It has been a lot of work! I am thankful for having the instructor I have had, she's done her best to teach everyone in the class but there are times where i'm confused and have to go home and redo problems just to make sure i did them right. But look at it this way...although it is half way through...you are now on the top of the hill about to go down the hill...not ur grade of course.

It definitely helps to do the extra credit problems. At least for me it's helped with my exams. Hang in there itsa...we are almost done!!!

Hi! I am new to this site, and I have a question... I read your message re: Micro. study group, however, I see no link or other postings with the study group itself? How do I join a study group/find a study group? Thank-You for your assistance!!

~Erin

Ps-Are you still running this group/know of other study groups going on this semester on this / other sites?

I believe if you click on the top site at the pre nursing forum, there is a micro section for study groups. I hope there will be information there to help out. :wink2:
