Chem and Micro

Published

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but I figure it might be a good idea to get some advice. I am starting prereqs for nursing in a couple weeks. (ADN) The program I plan on applying for does not require Chemistry. The prereqs for A&P I were either Principles of Biology or Chemistry OR a score higher than a 23 on the science placement test (I got a 42).

BUT I am considering applying for more than one program, just so I don't have to wait so long once finishing my prereqs (I am 29 and want to get this show on the road! :D ) and the other program DOES require Chemistry with lab. I am taking Intro to Computer Info Systems, College Algebra, and Comp I this Summer.....then A&P I, Comp II, and Psyc 2103 this Fall. That would leave me with Microbiology and A&P II in the spring to fulfill my nursing prereqs before applying (I do have some previous college credits that transfer, like entry level PSYC, SOC, and electives.)

I am wondering if I should plan on adding Chemistry to the Spring just to make sure I fulfill the prereqs for the other school. Is it completely unrealistic to think that Chemistry, A&P II, and Microbiology could be done all in the same semester??? :uhoh3::confused: Yikes. I'm scared. I just wanted to get everything done this Spring, so I can apply for entry into the Summer or Fall 2011 nursing programs. Help!

It sounds like a lot to take on, but it totally depends on your level of knowledge and comfort with chemistry. I've had friends who have taken anatomy and micro both over 6 week summer sessions and friends who have taken 7 classes at a time including the sciences. At the end of the day it's individual and what you can handle, and only you know that. I think that if you have a good grasp on chemistry and it will be more of a refresher as opposed to learning brand new material, you can do it. Micro and A&P are a lot of memorization so it may be a tough load, but anything is possible. Considering the competitiveness and how impacted nursing schools are, you should do whatever you can to be able to apply to as many schools as possible.

Best of luck!

I assume the micro is with a lab? It is tough to do two lab classes together with other classes. Also, the chem will be a big help with the micro. So, I'd do the chem in the fall and move the comp II and/or psych to the spring. Unless there is more to it....like you find out if you are accepted at your first school before spring term so will know you if you don't need the chem.

I think I might add one of those science classes to your summer schedule before I would take 3 at once, can you do that? I also second Saysfaa's advice.

chemistry is really EASY, pay attention and take good notes.

add it during the summer.

i did it in 6 weeks, easy A

Thanks, everyone!

I think I will plan on taking it Summer 2011, so I don't feel so bogged down in the Spring while taking micro and A&P II. I will be applying for the ADN program (that doesn't require chem) in Feb 2011, even though I will still be finishing prereqs....as long as A&P II is competed by the end of the Spring semester, they will still take my application. Then they send out acceptance letters in May for entrance into the Summer track and send out letters in July for entrance into the Fall track. I guess it would be a waste if I end up taking Chem that Summer, only to find out in July that I've been accepted for the Fall track, but I guess there's also a chance that I could get into the Summer track and then I wouldn't have to worry about the Chem class at all. Hhhhmmmm:rolleyes: Wishful thinking!
