Charlotte area ADN Programs Help?

Published

Hi everyone, I am new to allnurses. I have some questions about the ADN programs in and around Charlotte NC. I'm currently a student at CPCC and I was accepted to the Respiratory Therapy program for Fall 2013 but recently have become more interested in Nursing.. I'm looking at nursing programs at CPCC, Carolinas College of Health Sciences, and Cabarrus College of Health Sciences and planning to apply to all for spring 2014.

I was wondering for people who have been accepted to any of these schools... 1: how competitive are the schools, and 2: (if you don't mind sharing)what was your HS/college gpa, Teas V scores, SAT/ACT scores etc.

I also am interested in Pre-nursing at Carolinas/Cabarrus mainly because of the 'guaranteed' acceptance to nursing if completed successfully.. but if I were accepted for pre nursing in Spring do they do a Summer semester as well, which would possibly allow me to start the actual Nursing curriculum in the Fall? Is Pre-nursing any less competitive than Nursing? And if I applied to Nursing and am not accepted, would they automatically consider me for pre-nursing?

THANK YOU :)

I do believe you have the option for pre nursing if there are slots available at the time you submit you application or youll be put in the pre professional degree at cabarrus college of health sciences. Its better if you are accepted into the pre nursing though. I, went the pre professional route, and am on the wait list for fall 2013. They dont let you know til closer to the semester starting so playing the wait game right now. Pre nursing starts in the fall or spring, but you are able to take the required courses starting that summer, you just have to be there at least two semesters. What happens in the pre professional is by mid terms, if you decide you want to try to get into a program, you attend a change of major meeting, and the school decides with your mid term grades if you are accepted into the program or waitlisted. Thats the route i just did this past spring.

So you did pre-professional at CCHS? I am doing a CNA course there starting June and the staff seems really nice from what I've seen.

Even if I have some pre-reqs done I should try for pre nursing instead of pre professional? I know I have to take A&P 1 and 2 still so I guess I'll be in one of the 'pre' programs for at least 2 semesters anyways. I think I'm just wondering if I did pre-nursing or pre-professional in the Spring would I be able to start the Nursing curriculum the following Fall?

Thanks for responding!

I'm at CCHS and did their pre-nursing program. I HIGHLY recommend it! There is no "pre-professional" program (?) at CCHS.

For pre-nursing, you take A&P 1 and 2, Med Term, and Math. If you earn a 3.25 or better, you're guaranteed a spot in the nursing program. You will most likely have an "off" semester between the 2 programs, which is when most people take micro, their CNA course, and any other classes they need (like SOC, PSY, ENG, etc). I started pre-nursing in Jan 2012 and started nursing Jan 2013.

You MUST apply to all of the programs you're considering. The nursing program is very competitive. They accept an average of 64 students twice a year and I'm sure there are well over 350-400 applications for each semester. You don't take the TEAS until after you've been conditionally accepted to the nursing program.

I was in high school and took the SAT in the 80s so I don't think those scores were weighed as heavily for me as my college GPA, which was (and still is) 4.0. It's an amazing school with incredibly supportive faculty. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
