Are you able to go to part time, like a 0.6 FTE (2 12-hrs or 3 8-hrs)? I do (2) 12 hr shifts a week on med/surg. However, I would prefer a clinical position because I would prefer that environment and schedule to med/surg...just they're hiring LPN's and med techs right now, not RN's for the current clinical openings. Holidays and weekends off seem like a dream.
I think a clinic would be a great way to get experience if you're considering NP...so it's all valuable.
go back to the clinic and stay casual in hospital! In this way you will have both!
I used to work in long term care and now I am in hospital, I miss the long term care, I felt I was making a difference in some people's life. I am planning on going back to long term care and stay in hospital on a small position or even casual!

I'm having serious issues here. I was hired at a pediatric clinic right out of school. I worked there for a year and a half until I finally got a job at the hospital. I've been there for 7 months now. My problem is that I feel like I'm missing out on my family and children's lives to be a hospital nurse. I didn't feel like a real nurse at the clinic, but the hours worked perfectly for my family. I'm currently rotating between nights and evenings, 8 and 12 hour shifts with no consistency, no matter how often I ask my boss. I guess I'm just looking for advice. Do I go back to the clinic for the next 10 years or so (they'd have me back in a heartbeat) and spend more time with my family, or stick it out as a real nurse and miss out?
