We are suppose to observe the hospital setting while in clinicals to find a topic/area that needs to be improved or changed and then use Lewin's Theory to write a paper on the change process. I am having trouble with this, because I cannot seem to find a topic that has enough literature and research to support the idea. Any help or ideas on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

I was on QA/QI committees for a number of years. The kinds of things we reviewed were nursing policies and procedures. Most commonly looked at are hand washing, foley catheter care, wound care. I think you will find nursing research on these subjects. I know there is research on would care. And, I know from my years in IV therapy that there is research on IV infections as well as infections of IV dressings and how often they need to be changed. Any time a policy or procedure is changed there is generally literature behind it. You might want to take a good look at the policy and procedure manual in the clinical site where you have been going. Publications to look in are the specialty nursing journals and the journals published by the hospital associations.

I did a project just like this when I worked on my BSN. I did mine on improved teaching. As you can see we never have enough time to teach. I noticed that the parents of peds patients were more traumatized with their childs IV start or restart than their child. So I went through all the steps and even came up with my own teaching tool and implemented it at my hospital. It was really easy to do this on a lack of teaching. Find out where patients need more teaching...think of the chronic disease states like diabetics...chf etc. If patients have education they will can make changes and manage their diseases better. If this is too overwhelming...just narrow it down to one small teaching tool.

iluvit,

That tool or project sounded very interesting. Do you still have a copie of that. I realized that this is a huge concern. I work at a small community hosptial and their techniques and policies are very lacking the good information. You really sound like you had a good well rounded idea and the facts to back it up. Would be interested in picking you head, if you dont mind.

I have actually been looking at this same topic for my change theory paper, but I am having a hard time beginning it. could you help me and give some good ideas to throw in with it.

I have been looking at this same topic in the clinical setting considering nurses really don't have time to teach they just print a few sheets of paper explaining the disease process and discharge the patient. I am having a hard time beginning this paper. If you would throw a few ideas out there that would be great thanks.
