Is it possible to change jobs/MOS's in the Air Force?

I'm an RN working on my BSN to earn a commission into the Air Force, but I also have an acceptance letter for an MBA in Healthcare Administration from University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (I have a Bachelor's in Chemistry). Would it be possible to change jobs to Healthcare Administrator upon earning the MBA?

It is extremely hard right now to go from nursing/nurse corps in the AF to medical service corps/MSC. Nurse corps is usually undermanned for the most part and the MSC usually stays pretty much full.

The last nurse I knew that tried to switch was denied a transfer to the MSC. That being said you can start out in the nurse corps and then do a short break in service ,if you are denied a transfer to MSC, and then reapply to the MSC corps after your initial tour of duty is up.

Thanks for the quick response, wtbcrna.

Would the MBA in Healthcare Administration help at all with career progression within the Nurse Corps? Also, since it isn't a nursing degree, would the AF even pay for it?

You could use tution assistance or your MGIB after you were in, but I don't think the AF will pay for a non-nursing degree prior to entry.

There are different career paths in the AF, and one of the biggest is as an administrator. As you progress an MBA in healthcare administration would be useful for a career as an nursing administrator.

Perfect! That's exactly what I needed to know! I'm SO ready to serve! Thanks again for the quick replies!

Would my Chief Nurse look at me unfavorably for wanting to switch to MSC?

FastRN as the previous post showed that nursing typically is short personnel and MSC is overmanned - in this situation your supervisor would probably be upset... it's not just your immediate supervisor that enables the switch to occur - that is just a recommendation... It is ultimately somewhat dependent on manpower of both branches and what is best for the greater good rather then your individual immediate goals. I will have to give the cliche military response and say that it is 'situationally dependent'.
