Chances of getting in to nursing school

Published

My girlfriend who's a Korean citizen was interested in nursing school.

I was wondering what would make her competitive. She has a BS in Biology with a GPA of 3.55 and has extensive research in microbiology with a first author publication. She also used to work as a waitress, but I don't think she has had very much clinical care experience. I'm wondering if its possible for her to get into either Johns Hopkins or Univ Maryland. I'm currently a med student at Hopkins so I would prefer her to come for nursing school at the same school, but she is also considering going to Canada for school.

I think she has some time before the next application cycle to do some hospital volunteer, but she also has to prepare for the toeffl. It would be great to hear any suggestions for us.

Thanks

I would say both her bio and micro background would be extremely beneficial in competition. More importantly, micro. Since all perspective nursing students need A&P, as well as having taken micro, she should definitely have a "one-up" on alot of people. Her extensive knowledge is both these fields would be vital in the cause&effect relationship of infections. But more importantly, would her GPA and BS make her competitive? Well, considering alot of programs require around a 3.0, and her's is considerably higher than that, I would say so. Her BS says she commited, and her credits would surely be considered upon review by the nursing comittee. As compared to other students that have little to none college "credentials", I would overall say she has a good shot of being accepted. Ofcourse, don't quote me, for things can always change. lol Good luck to her and to you at Hopkins.

If she wasn't raised in an English speaking country (a caveat I add because there are people who are citizens of one country but are raised in another), make sure she has a kick-ass TOEFL score.
