I am a RN in Michigan and also hold a license in Texas. I need to know the requirements for CEU for Texas for license expiring in Nov 09. Thankyou:redpinkhe

If I'm not mistaken, the Texas BNE requires nurses to earn 20 CEUs before every licensure renewal (every 2 years).

Exceptions are made for new nurses who are renewing their licenses for the very first time. People who fall into this category would only need to pay the renewal fees.

Commuter is correct. The continuing education requirement is waived for the first renewal period. Depending on when the initial license is issued, the first renewal period can be anywhere from 6 to 29 months.

The only mandatory topic is Forensic Nursing, and it only applies to those working in the Emergency Department.

And for what it's worth...it's 20 contact hours that are required...not CEUs. The contact hour is a 60-minute clock hour, while a CEU (continuing education unit) is equal to 10 contact hours. (Don't mean to be picky..it's just part of what I do at work!)

Please refer to the Texas Board of Nursing's website for more information on license renewal. They have sections specific to continuing education and license renewal. They also have FAQs that are fairly easy to read and understand.
