Hi! So let my start off by saying I don’t have the highest hopes for acceptance. My GPA isn’t great, my HESI was okay and I plan on retaking it. My overall was an 86% but I think I can easily score above a 90 on both. I applied to CGCC but have heard it’s hard to get into and I applied to upper iowa. I haven’t heard back for the intake period for Summer start 2021. UIU calculated my GPA at 2.957 and from what I calculated my Maricopa at it would be like 2.6. I scored a 85.33 on English and 90 on math. I really don’t want to retake any classes as I took them through Rio Salado and clawed my way through to pass. The next intake period I plan on reapplying with hopefully a 90+ HESI in both and plan on applying to SCC MCC and CGCC. Is my outlook okay for at least one of those schools or probably not? I’m doing my best to not feel like trash. Wish being a CNA counted towards something.

First of all, I just want to encourage you to not give up. You will get into the program and you will become a nurse one day! All of these struggles will make you a better nurse! Now I do want to be honest with you so you can do what you can to improve your chances of getting in the program. I have rarely seen anybody get into the program under 80 points (on rare occasion I have heard 79). With that being said, while I do think retaking your HESI will help, that alone will not be able to boost your score enough to make you more competitive. Even if you managed to get around 90% overall on the HESI, your score would be around 74 (45 points from HESI + 29 from GPA). There are a few options that would help boost your score:
I recommend talking to an advisor at your CC and seeing how many classes you would need to take to complete an associates degree. Depending on how many classes, you likely would be able to finish before the December-January application intake which would add 2.5 points to your application.
Although I know it is hard to hear, I would really consider redoing some of your prereqs. Getting your GPA up would be a huge help. I wouldn't necessarily retake all of them but the ones that are bringing your GPA down the most. I know A&P/Micro are a lot of work but even now that I am in block 2, I feel like I would have benefited from spending more time learning those subjects. I also would recommend taking them at another CC besides Rio. From my experience and other people I have talked to, Rio does not offer any support or guidance on what to study or any lectures on material. I believe if I would have ended up doing my nursing prereqs at Rio, I wouldn't have had as good GPA.
Lastly, you may just want to go the traditional route. I am not sure when you submitted your traditional application or how long the wait list is but it will still get you in the program eventually. I know it is hard to wait but spending your time saving money and reviewing A&P will be beneficial. In nursing school, they are always making you spend more money in the program so having a savings will help a lot. Plus I have found some semesters it is really hard to do the CEP program because you feel as the university classes are taking too much of your time when you want to focus on the material you are learning in your blocks.
Whatever you choose, I just want to wish you the best of luck and just know you can do this :)

Hi! Thank you for responding. I’ve decided I’ll retake two classes which I don’t think I’ll struggle with if I’m taking them anywhere but Rio honestly. If I get A’s in both of those I think it’ll bring my GPA for maricopa up to 3.0 I’m hoping that will be enough with a better HESI score. I’m trying not to beat myself up too much about it. I’ve seen some posts in facebook groups say they’ve seen the low end of the cohort accept 74-76 hoping this is true. But thank you!

I’m applying April 1st 2021 and this will be my 4th time applying ? but I’m confident this time. I’m still hoping to hear back from December applications hopefully. I’m trying not to break down but I got to keep my prayers alive ✨?✨

What is your GPA/HESI scores? Also where did you apply? Just asking because there’s no way I’m going to go 80 points realistically unless I retake and ACE about 3 classes and right now the plan is to only retake two and pass the HESI with a 90+.

The lowest score they took for MCC was 81. something from what the nursing advisor there said. I never did get a rejection letter from last round. ? Im beyond frustrated
