It's to make sure the patient does not have a pneumothorax.

How would I check for a pneumothorax?
You tell by X-ray.

You would also listen to the lung fields while you wait for x-ray to come up. Diminished or absent breath sounds on the side that the central line was placed would be indicative of a pneumo.
